 Using Table G.

1 the filter in Column AB (highlighted in blue) is activated by

clicking on the arrow and ‘custom’ selected.
 In the first row the sign >= is selected and the number 56 entered. In the second row
the sign <= is selected and the number 62 entered (i.e. filtering out all records which
are outside of the wear score range). Pressing OK displays 19 specimens which have
wear scores within this range.
 Their ages range from 29 to 55 months (Column B).
 The modal age is 36 months (8 specimens) and the mean age is 37 months.

2. Fragmented roe deer mandible with only M3 and M1 present: Wear scores of 28,
and 26, respectively and a partial score of 54.

 The same spreadsheet (Table G.1) is used but this time the sub-total column M1 + M3
(Z) is used as there is only a partial score.
 The same procedure is followed as above creating a wear score range of 51 - 57.
 Filtering in Column Z (highlighted in red) produces 16 specimens having tooth wear
sub-totals within this range.
 The ages range from 46 to 91 months.
 The are two modal ages of 46 months and 81months (two specimens) and the mean
age is 68 months.

By calculating the maximum, minimum, mean and modal ages from the modern
age ranges it provides an indication of possible age of the specimen. Ageing resolution
is greatest if all three molars are available for scoring, but age can still be assessed from
a single molar. The procedure outlined above will be followed when estimating the ages
of complete/fragmented mandibles or loose teeth from the Mesolithic sites.

8.3.2 Red Deer

No dentally mature specimens of known-age or known-kill date were available

for study and it has not been possible to create a database of modern tooth wear scores.
A study has been made of the tooth wear scores of juvenile red deer from
