Planning a Book Trailer

1. Learner Analysis:

a. Age/Gender: Children ages 6-9 yrs - both genders

b. Cultural Background: American culture but relatable to other cultures

c. Educational Level: Grades 1-4

d. Special Needs/Accommodations: Students may require accommodations including

small group instruction, read-aloud questions, or extended time and

modifications based on and individual IEP, 504, or ESOL
documentation.
e. Specific Entry Skills: Skills would require general listening and comprehension for a
read aloud. For independent reading, students would need to at least
be reading on a first-grade level for comprehension. Other than
listening and/or reading skills, no special skills are necessary to
comprehend or relate to this story. Even younger ages would relate to
this story but may not be able to read it independently.

e. Motivation – Keller’s ARCS Model (Describe how you will integrate each component
into your book trailer to get your audience’s attention.)
· Attention – To gain the audiences’ attention, I will ask questions and use specific examples
from the story like, “Would you ever chew gum that was chewed by someone else over 1,000
times so you wouldn’t have to eat broccoli?” I will provide pictures from the story and narrate it.
· Relevance – Ask if their dad has ever offered them a “stinky sock” or some other silly item to
replace the food they didn’t want to eat? Provide kid-friendly details that relate this to a previous
experience the children may have had with eating.
· Confidence – Provide details of the story that piques their interest and encourages the
audience to see how the story will end - in favor of the boy or the dad?
· Satisfaction – This story will provide newly acquired knowledge that is relatable to the
student with the boy eating the foods and learning, “were these oh-so-yucky foods as bad as
James thought they were or did he actually really LOVE them after-all?”
