Answers
(1) 30 seconds

Step 1

Step 2
After travelling 3 vertical metres from the point of start C, its new position is B. Let us consider
triangle ABO and ABC:
We have: AB is common
AC = AO = 3 m (AC = 6 - 3 = 3 m)
Angle BAO = Angle BAC (right angles)
This means triangles ABO and ABC are congruent.

Step 3
From step 2 we have BC = OB = 6 m. Now we have BC = OB = CO = 6 m. This means that
triangle BCO is an equilateral triangle.

Step 4
We know that all interior angles of an equilateral triangle are equal to 60 degrees, we have Angle
COB = 60.

Step 5
One revolution is equal to 360 degrees, which, according to the question, is completed in 3
minutes. 360º in 3 minutes
Or, 360º in 3 × 60 = 180 seconds
180
60º in × 60 = 30 seconds.
360

Step 6
It takes rider 30 seconds to travel 3 vertical metres from the point of start.

(2) 5

Step 1
According to the question,
95C - 190A = 570 -----(1),
285A + 95B = 855 -----(2)

Step 2
By adding equation (1) and (2), we get:
95C + 285A -190A + 95B = 1425
⇒ 95C + 95A + 95B = 1425
⇒ 95(C + A + B) = 1425
⇒ C + A + B = 1425/95
⇒ A + B + C = 15

Step 3
A+B+C
Now, the average of A, B, C =

(3) 12

Step 1
Let the number of 2-marks question be x. Then, the number of 4-marks questions = 19 - x.

Step 2
The total marks secured will be equal to: 2x + 4(19 - x) = 76 - 2x.

Step 3
Total marks secured by Ajoy = 52. Thus,
76 - 2x = 52
or, 2x = 24
or, x = 12.

Step 4
The number of 2-marks questions Ajoy attempted is 12.

Step 1
It is given that f(x) = x + 2
or, f-1(x) = x - 2

Step 2
10
f-1(g(h(5))) = f-1(g( ))
5
= f-1(g(2))
= f-1(5 × 2)
= f-1(10)
= 10 - 2

(5) (3p + 4) (3p + 4) (3p - 4) (3p - 4)

Step 1

Let's factorize 81p4 - 288p 2 + 256

= 81p4 - 288p 2 + 256
= (9p2)2 - (2 × 16 × 9) + 16 2

Step 2

Since we know that (a - b)2 = a2 - 2ab + b 2]

= (9p2 - 16)2
= {(3p) 2 - 4 2}2
= {(3p + 4)(3p - 4)}2 ...[Since we know that a 2 - b 2 = (a + b)(a - b)]
= (3p + 4)(3p + 4)(3p - 4)(3p - 4)

Step 3

Thus, the factors of (81p4 - 288p 2 + 256) are (3p + 4), (3p + 4), (3p - 4) and (3p - 4).

(6) 110°

Step 1

Draw a line MN parallel to both lines PQ and AB.

According to the figure,
∠W1 + ∠W2 + ∠W = 360°
⇒ ∠W = 360° - ∠W1 - ∠W2

Step 2
Now, AB and MN are two parallel lines cut by a transversal OA.
Hence, ∠MOA = ∠OAB (Alternate angles)
⇒ ∠W2 = 54°

Step 3
Now, PQ and MN are two parallel lines cut by a transversal OP.
Hence, ∠MOP = ∠OPQ (Alternate angles)
⇒ ∠W1 = 56°

Step 4
We know, ∠W = ∠W1 + ∠W2
= 56° + 54°
= 110°

Step 1
The principal wants to divide students in section such that a section can have only boys or only
girls and all sections should have same number of students.
Therefore both total number of boys and total number of girls should be fully divisible by number of
students in a section. Also since we want as fewer section as possible, the number of students in
a section should be as high as possible.
Therefore, the number of students in each section
= Maximum possible number which fully divides both number of boys and number of girls,
=The HCF of 165 and 180.

Step 2
Calculating the HCF of 165 and 180.
All prime factors of 165 = 3 × 5 × 11,
All prime factors of 180 = 2 × 2 × 3 × 3 × 5,
The HCF of 165 and 180 is = 3 × 5 = 15

Step 3
The number of students in each section = 15.

Step 4
The total number of students in the school
The number of sections in the school =

Step 1
Sarika will be on one of the two committees for sure. Which will leave two seats on the 5 member
committee.

Step 2
Now for Sarika and Sita to be in same committee, Sita has to be one of the 2 members of the 7
remaining members.

Step 3
Therefore the likelihood that Sita gets one of the remaining two seats, = Number of vacant
seats/Remaining candidates
= 2/7
= 6.349%

(10) 16:1

Step 1
1
We know that the volume of a cone with radius r and height h = πr2h.
3

Step 2
4
We also know that the volume of a sphere with radius r = πr3.
3

Step 3
We have been told that the volume of the sphere is one fourth the volume of the cone.

Step 1
The average of 11 numbers is 42, which means the sum of numbers is equal to 42 × 11 = 462.

Step 2
The average of first 5 numbers is 46, which means the sum of first 5 numbers is 46 × 5 = 230.

Step 3
The average of last 5 numbers is 44, which means the sum of last 5 numbers is 44 × 5 = 220.

Step 4
The sum of first and last 5 numbers is 230 + 220 = 450.

Step 5

This means the 6th number is 462 - 450 = 12.

(12) (5, 8)

Let's consider the second line first.

The line which is parallel to the y-axis and is at a distance 5 units from the origin in the positive
direction of the x-axis is defined by the following equation
x=5 So, now we know that at the point of intersection, the value of x = 5
The equation of the first line is
8x + 8y = 104
Subtituting for x with the value 5 in this equation, we get
y=5
So the answer is that the intersection is at the point (5, 8)

Step 1
After 3 hours of burning, both candles have the same length remaining. Let this length be r.

Step 2
The shorter candle can burn fully in a total of 7 hours but has already been lit for 3 hours. Thus its
remaining length r will burn in another 7 - 3 = 4 hours.
Similarly, for the longer candle, the remaining length r will burn in another 5 - 3 = 2 hours.

Step 3
For shorter candle:

Length that burns in 4 hours = r units

r
Length that burns in 7 hours = × 7 units
4
7r
Thus, the original length of the candle = units
4

Similarly, for the larger candle:

Length that burns in 2 hours = r units

r
Length that burns in 5 hours = × 5 units
2
5r
Thus, the original length of the candle = units

(14) 80 cm 3

Step 1
There are three equations we need to know in this type of question - the volume of a cylinder, the
volume a sphere, and the remaining volume of the gap between the sphere and the cylinder.

Step 2

The volume of a cylinder of radius 'r' and height 'h' is πr 2h. Here, we know the sphere will fit in
exactly in the cylinder, so h=2r, and the formula now becomes 2πr3.

Step 3
4
The sphere will have the radius 'r' so its volume is πr3.
3

Step 4
The volume of the gap between the cylinder and the sphere is all the volume inside the cylinder not
taken up by the sphere.
This is the difference between the volume of the cylinder and the volume of the sphere.
4
i.e. volume of the gap = 2πr3 - πr 3
3
2
Simplifying, volume of the gap = πr 3
3

Step 5
So we have 3 equations:
Volume of the cylinder = 2πr3
4
Volume of the sphere = πr 3
3
2
Volume of the gap = πr 3
3

Step 6

Here, we know that volume of the gap between the cylinder and the sphere is 40 cm 3. We need to
find the volume of the sphere.

Step 7

Substituting from the equation above, we get volume of the sphere = 80 cm3

(15) 168°

Step 1
If we look at the question carefully, we notice that we have to find the complement of 78° and then
find the supplement of the complement of 78°.

Step 2
We know, the sum of the complementary angles is 90°.
Therefore, the complement of 78°,
= 90° - 78°
= 12°

Step 3
The sum of the supplementary angles is 180°.
Therefore, the supplement of 12°,
= 180° - 12°
= 168°

Step 4
Hence, the value of the supplement of the complement of 78° is 168°.
