Dr. Martin Luther King exhibited various leadership traits as seen in the video.

Firstly, his
intelligence as portrayed in the video is laudable. He displayed understanding and great insight in
the American culture, the different issues people encountered and possible solutions to them. He
also showed understanding of the US politics, knowledge of different region topology and gave
examples of incidence that happened in the region. His intelligence coupled with his incredible
oratory skill made his speech appealing. King’s verbal ability and method of speech delivery is
second to none and it is one of the skill a leader should possess in order to be better. Having
great verbal skill, noncognitive and intuitive ability seems to shape one to a great leader
(Northouse, 2016).

Secondly, his determination was endearing. His speech showed he could go any length to
achieve his dream. He exuded a great determination in sharing his beliefs and dreams of a
community where everyone is treated fairly and equally. As Northouse (2016) states,
Determination is a major trait a good leader should possess as it is the push to carry out a task.

Self-confidence was another trait portrayed by Martin Luther King in his video. As Northouse
(2016) states, self-confidence is an act of certainty in one’s ability and skills. He had great self-
esteem and was able to connect with his audience needs at a critical time in America history
where racial inequality was a big issue. King had a vision and belief, which he reiterated in his
speech “I have a dream” He was confident that he could institute peace and halt racial
discrimination. His self-confidence gave the speech away and is one the reason his speech is
iconic.

In my opinion, Martin Luther King was born a leader as his leadership traits are shown
effortlessly with zeal and passion and have influenced great leaders and people around the world.
