As | was her field instructor this past year at M.S.U., | believe | can provide an honest assessment of her skills and aptitude, particularly those needed to be successful in the field of secondary education. As a social studies consultant with the Ottawa Area ISD for the past ten years, | work with teachers K-12, on various social studies initiatives across each of the public schools as well as some of the parochial and charter schools within our ISD. This has provided me the opportunity to share and model best practices for curriculum development, instructional strategies for implementation, and a growth mindset for assessment design. The enthusiasm and continued desire to learn that Hanna demonstrated throughout the year in our team seminars with regard to each of those tenants was a small part of her dedication to becoming an effective social studies teacher. This was further demonstrated each time | observed Hanna as she looked forward to implementing her new learning into the lessons she taught. Hanna's ever-present positive and “can-do” attitude proved effective throughout her internship. Her mentor teacher Tom, was quite impressed with her ability to establish positive relationships with each student and the rapidity at which she was able to do so. Along with her professional attitude, creativity, enthusiasm, and calm demeanor, he remarked that she took initiative in multiple instances demonstrating responsibilty, maturity, respect, and a passion for teaching—many of the professional dispositions needed to be an effective educator Ihave absolutely no reservations about Hanna’s preparedness to be an outstanding educator. Her energy, flexibility, and passion along with her effective communication skills and life-long approach to education are the necessary qualities of an exceptional educator. Combined with her effective listening skills and multi-faceted pedagogical approach to student engagement in social studies, any district would be extremely fortunate to add Hanna to its faculty.
