A hunter aims his gun and fires a bullet directly at a monkey on a tree.

At the instant the bullet

leaves the barrel of the gun, the monkey drops. Will the bullet hit the monkey?substantiate
your answer with proper reasoning.

As shown in figure ,the gun at O is directed towards the monkey at position M .Suppose the
bullet leaves the barrel of the gun with velocity u at an angle θ with the horizontal. let the bullet
cross the vertical line AC at B after time t .Horizontal distance travelled,
OC=x =ucos θ ×t
x
Or t= ....(1)
ucos θ
For motion of the bullet from O to C , The vertical range is
1
BC=usin θ ×t− × g ×t 2
2
1
¿ xtanθ− × g ×t 2 [using( 1)]
2
Also AC=xtan θ

⇒ AB= AC −BC
1 1
⇒=xtanθ−[ xtanθ− × g ×t 2 ]=¿ × g ×t 2
2 2

since the monkey is free falling and hence the vertical distance covered by monkey in time t is,

1
d= × g × t 2
2
This distance d covered by monkey is equal to AB.The bullet and monkey will always reach
point B at the same time. So the bullet will always hit the monkey no matter what is the velocity
of bullet.
