Nurses are vital to delivering great patient care. It should go
without saying that a strong recruitment and retention strategy to find and keep the best nurses for your hospital is essential.
But we also know the reality. The nursing shortage is a real
issue that puts strain on hospital resources. Sometimes a hospital simply needs to fill positions as quickly as possible, but Nurse Managers could have bigger problems 6 months down the road if those nurses aren’t a good fit.
With large numbers of older workers retiring and nurses in high
demand, nurse recruiters, hospital administrators and other involved in the hiring process must be proactive to attract younger millennial nurses. So what are these nurses looking for and what works for bringing them board? Millennial want opportunities for growth. Because most of the millennial want to be part of the team and exercise autonomy and an opportunity to make decisions.
Moreover, many of the hired millennial nurses continue in
master's program while starting a new job. Second, millennial also are interested in the benefits facilities can offer. In my own opinion, maybe most of us are after of the benefits of what the facility can offer. Many of us want a work-life balance. We nurses are not just working to advance or make difference, we want fulfilling lives. We want to enjoy life, not spend all of our time working. Another is, millennial work well on a team and want to belong and feel valued. The word is collaboration, they have a lot of opinions and want their opinions to be heard. Lastly, millennial nurses are technologically savvy. Social media plays a role in millennial's lives.
Even before the COVID-19 pandemic crisis took hold, it was no
secret that the healthcare industry faced enormous nursing shortages. The corona virus crisis put a new focus on the acute need for qualified nurses.
