REPORT ON
PETROGRAPHIC STUDY OF ROCK SAMPLES
INTRODUCTION:
This report incorporates petrographic study of Sevenrock samples from Sevoke- Rangpo New BG Project, Sikkim. Petrography
of rock samples has been carried out as per standard IS: 2386 (Pt-8)-1963 (Reaffirmed-1997)-“Petrographic Examination”.
Thin sections of the given sample were examined megascopically as well as under polarizing microscope with an aim to
identify different mineral constituents, detrimental minerals, if any and photo-micrographed for documentation. The
microscopic examination also includes study of micro-textures and alterations which have been observed between mineral’s
grain boundaries.
The rock description given hereunder solely pertains to megascopic and microscopic study of two thin sections of sample
without any feedback of the field description and name from the sender. Keeping this in view, it is suggested that given name
of the rock type by laboratory studies should preferably not be matched with text book description of the rock. But it should
be viewed in conjunction with alterations identified, if any, of the rock.
Megascopic study of the sample (Study aid –naked eye & hand lens)
The given rock sample is greyish white in color. It is a fine to medium grained, hard and compact rock with medium
specific gravity. The minerals which can be identified in the hand specimen include quartz, muscovite and feldspar (Fig-5).
Sample shows folding structure and laminar structure which could be due to high stress.

REPORT ON
PETROGRAPHIC STUDY OF ROCK SAMPLES
INTRODUCTION:
This report incorporates petrographic study of rock samples from Sevok-Rangpo New BG Project... Petrography
of rock samples has been carried out as per standard IS: 2386 (Pt-8)-1963 (Reaffirmed-1997)-“Petrographic
Examination”.
Thin sections of the given sample were examined megascopically as well as under polarizing microscope with
an aim to identify different mineral constituents, detrimental minerals, if any and photo-micro graphed for
documentation. The microscopic examination also includes study of micro-textures and alterations which have
been observed between mineral’s grain boundaries.
The rock description given hereunder solely pertains to megascopic and microscopic study of two thin sections
of sample without any feedback of the field description and name from the sender. Keeping this in view, it is
suggested that given name of the rock type by laboratory studies should preferably not be matched with text
book description of the rock. But it should be viewed in conjunction with alterations identified, if any, of the
rock.
Megascopic study of the sample (Study aid –naked eye & hand lens)
The given rock sample is greyish in colour, fine to medium grained with medium to high specific gravity.
Identifiable minerals in the hand specimen include quartz and mica. The sample is Fe-stained at places (Fig-25).

(Petrography Analysis)
INTRODUCTION:
This report incorporates petrographic study of rock samples. The rock samples were
Submitted by Arihant Drillings Pvt.Ltd., at the Aimil Testing Laboratory, New Delhi office dated 09-05-2018.
A total numbers of 42 thin sections were prepared. Petrography of rock samples has been carried
out as per standard IS: 2386 (Pt-8)-1963 (Reaffirmed-1997)-“Petrographic Examination”.
Thin sections of the given samples were examined megascopically as well as under polarizing
microscope with an aim to identify different mineral constituents, detrimental minerals, if any and
photo-micrographed for documentation. The microscopic examination also includes study of micro-
textures and alterations which have been observed between minerals grain boundaries.
The rocks description given hereunder solely pertains to megascopic study of the given sample and
microscopic study of two thin sections only of the same. It is suggested that given name of the rock
type by laboratory studies should preferably not be matched with text book description of the rock or
exactly with the field name because the names in the field are generally averaged out based upon
field observation on a larger area. These studies under the microscope do provide an insight into the
details of the rack samples which are difficult to be observed in the field or recordable on a mapable
scale. Herein the rocks have been named following the customary subscript in case of intercalations of
two or more rock types. For example Quartzitic phyllite connotes that the given sample has less of
quartzite component and phyllite is the main component of the rock sample under study.
Megascopic Study of the Sample (Study aid –naked eye & hand lens):

The sample is dark grey in colour, fine grained with medium specific gravity. It has a very incipient foliation and by and large
the rock is massive. It is a hard and compact rock. The surface of the rock has a sheen due to presence of fine grained white
mica which may be termed as sericite..

Petrography Analysis
INTRODUCTION:
This report incorporates petrographic study of rock samples from Sevoke-Rangpo New BG Project. The
rock samples were submitted by M/sArihant Drillings Pvt LTD, at the Aimil Testing Laboratory, New Delhi
office dated 23/05/2018.
A total numbers of 20 thin sectionswere prepared. Petrography of rock samples has been carried out as per
standard IS: 2386 (Pt-8)-1963 (Reaffirmed-1997)-“Petrographic Examination”.
Thin sections of the given samples were examined megascopically as well as under polarizing microscope
with an aim to identify different mineral constituents, detrimental minerals, if any and photo-micrographed for
documentation. The microscopic examination also includes study of micro-textures and alterations which
have been observed between minerals grain boundaries.
The rocks description given hereunder solely pertains to megascopic study of the given sample and
microscopic study of two thin sections only of the same. It is suggested that given name of the rock type by
laboratory studies should preferably not be matched with text book description of the rock or exactly with the
field name because the names in the field are generally averaged out based upon field observation on a
larger area. These studies under the microscope do provide an insight into the details of the rack samples
which are difficult to be observed in the field or recordable on a mapable scale. Herein the rocks have been
named following the customary subscript in case of intercalations of two or more rock types . For example
Quartzitic phyllite connotes that the given sample has less of quartzite component and phyllite is the main
component of the rock sample under study.

Megascopic Study of the Sample (Study aid –naked eye & hand lens):
The given sample consists of intercalations of phyllite within quartzite. Intercalations are very thinly laminated and
identifiable with dark colour bending. The rock is quit fine grained with medium specific gravity and dark grey in
colour. The individual minerals cannot be identified except flaks of white mica and thin layers of quartz occurring
within foliation planes. By and large the rock is hard and compact.

photographic attachment)

sub parallelism of flaky minerals and a few stretched grains of quartz. There are quite a few grains of quartz
which are lying at angle to the foliation of the rock which may be due to their formation subsequent to
metamorphism and deformation. Ferruginous material occurs as blebs as well as elongate aggregate

Megascopic Study of the Sample (Study aid –naked eye & hand lens):
The given sample is greenish grey in colour, fine grained with medium specific gravity. It is characterized by very fine
and thin foliation planes which are occupied by phyllite with intervening quartzite. Individual mineral grains cannot be
identified even in hand lens.

muscovite, chlorite and stretched grains of quartz, though the individual grains boundaries are seen on higher
magnification x100. Quartz rich portion also have a good content of flakes of mica as well as chlorite but foliation
is absent and minerals are distributed haphazardly. The presence of quartz grains between foliation planes
Note: Generally Soil samples not found. if found, those Soil samples were not significant for lab test.
Lab test have been done on suitable samples only in rock.

(Petrography Analysis)
INTRODUCTION:
This report incorporates petrographic study of rock samples from Sevoke-Rangpo New BG Project. The rock
sample was submitted by M/s Arihant Drillings Pvt. Ltd. on 09/07/2018 at the Aimil testing Laboratory, New
Delhi office.
Petrography of rock sample has been carried out as per standard IS: 2386 (Pt-8)-1963 (Reaffirmed-1997)-
“Petrographic Examination”.
Thin sections of the given sample were examined megascopically as well as under polarizing microscope with
an aim to identify different mineral constituents, detrimental minerals, if any and photo-micrographed for
documentation. The microscopic examination also includes study of micro-textures and alterations which have
been observed between minerals grain boundaries.
The rock description given hereunder solely pertains to megascopic and microscopic study of two thin sections
only without any feedback of the field description and name, keeping this in view it is suggested that given
name of the rock type by laboratory studies should preferably not be matched with text book description of the
rock. But it should be viewed in conjunction with alterations identified, if any, of the rock.
Megascopic Study of the Sample (Study aid –naked eye & hand lens):
7/12
Report No.: RC-145
Date: 04/08/2018
The given rock sample is off-white to light grey in colour. The rock is medium to coarse grained, hard and
compact and has medium specific gravity. It is characterized by very fine and thin foliation planes which are
occupied by phyllite with intervening quartzite.

Megascopic Study of the Sample (Study aid –naked eye & hand lens):
The given sample consists of mainly phyllite with intercalations of quartzite. It is grey, fine grained rock with specks
of white mica spread throughout the rock which is the only mineral that can be identified. The rock has medium
specific gravity and there are thin bands of secondary quartz along foliation planes at places. There is an appearance
that at places volume by volume replacement of parent minerals has taken place by secondary quartz, this
observation will be validated by microscopic study. In general the rock is hard and compact.

REPORT ON
PETROGRAPHIC STUDY OF ROCK SAMPLES
INTRODUCTION:
This report incorporates petrographic study of nine rock samples from Sevok-Rangpo New BG Project...
Petrography of rock samples has been carried out as per standard IS: 2386 (Pt-8)-1963 (Reaffirmed-1997)-
“Petrographic Examination”.
Thin sections of the given sample were examined megascopically as well as under polarizing microscope with an
aim to identify different mineral constituents, detrimental minerals, if any and photo-micro graphed for
documentation. The microscopic examination also includes study of micro-textures and alterations which have
been observed between mineral’s grain boundaries.
The rock description given hereunder solely pertains to megascopic and microscopic study of two thin sections of
sample without any feedback of the field description and name from the sender. Keeping this in view, it is
suggested that given name of the rock type by laboratory studies should preferably not be matched with text
book description of the rock. But it should be viewed in conjunction with alterations identified, if any, of the rock.

Megascopic study of the sample (Study aid –naked eye & hand lens)
The given rock sample is greenish in color. It is a fine grained, hard and compact rock with high specific gravity.
The sample is stained and quartz vein is present. Well-developed schistosity, that has a silky sheen due to the
parallel orientation of phyllosilicate minerals i.e. chlorite, muscovite.
