Give this a try...

I use white-coated Remo "Diplomat" heads on all the drums, with no muffling
whatsoever. (clear "Diplomat" snare-side head) The bass drum has white-coated
"Ambassador" heads, with a 3-inch wide piece of thin felt behind each head, running
across the inside of the drum head at about 1/3rd of the way in from the edge. No
other muffling.
