Physics 4A Winter 2019 Test 1

Name:
Jan 25, 2019

Please show your work! Answer as many questions as you can, in any order. Calculators
are allowed. Books and notes are not allowed. Use any blank space to answer questions, but
please make sure it is clear which question your answer refers to.

Any answer that asks for an expression may include the symbol g, representing the ac-
celeration due to gravity at the Earth’s surface.

g = 9.8 ms−2

Trigonometric Identities
sin2 θ + cos2 θ = 1
sin(2θ) = 2 sin(θ) cos(θ)
cos(2θ) = cos2 θ − sin2 θ
sin(α ± β) = sin α cos β ± cos α sin β
cos(α ± β) = cos α cos β ∓ sin α sin β
cos α cos β = 21 [cos(α − β) + cos(α + β)]
sin α sin β = 21 [cos(α − β) − cos(α + β)]
sin α cos β = 12 [sin(α + β) + sin(α − β)]
sin θ + π2 = cos θ

cos θ + π2 = − sin θ

1. The velocity of a certain particle constrained to move along the x-axis is given by

v (t) = (v0 + nt)2 î where n and v0 are constants. Given that at time t = 0 the particle
is at position x0 î, find expressions for

(a) the acceleration of the particle as a function of time [3 pts]

(b) the position of the particle as a function of time [5 pts]

for times t > 0.

2. A projectile is fired in such a way that its horizontal range is equal to four times its
maximum height. What is the angle of projection? [9 pts]

3
3. An elevator accelerates downwards at a constant acceleration of a = g/5. At time
t = 0, the elevator is moving downwards with speed vie (relative to the ground), a
bolt breaks free of the elevator’s ceiling and falls down. The elevator’s floor-to-ceiling
height is h.

(a) Find an expression for the time when the bolt hits the floor of the elevator. [6 pts]
(b) Relative to the Earth, how far has the elevator moved in that time? [3 pts]
(c) Relative to the Earth, how far did the bolt fall before hitting the floor? [2 pts]

4. A car drives counterclockwise (as seen from above) around a circular track of radius
50.0 m. At one moment in time it is increasing its speed at a rate of 2.00 m/s2 . If, at
that moment, the car is traveling due North and the car’s total acceleration is 6.00 m/s2

(a) what is the car’s speed at that moment? [6 pts]

(b) what is the direction of the car’s acceleration vector? [3 pts]
