Daily we interact with other human beings around us such as our family, friends, and colleagues.

Poor communication skills can lead to a limited life every time our conversations break down.
Productive and effective communication skills can be very beneficial for the career. Learning
how to rectify communication skills can improve our relationships with other individuals in our
life. Communication has not only a verbal component such as the language or speaking but also
a non-verbal component such as the body language, which is often neglected. Emotions can also
be part of the non-verbal component. To enhance communication techniques, one needs to
recognise the barriers to effective communication skills. Communication barriers do not allow us
to convey and understand the message correctly and precisely, which can cause confusion and
misunderstanding. Some of the barriers to effective communication include physical, personal,
psychological, and cultural barriers. These barriers often intervene in the complete flow of
communication and fail in interpersonal communication. Physical barriers can appear due to
distance between the sender or receiver, disturbance in the medium of communication, noise.
Personal barriers are the factors personal to the sender or receiver of the message, such as life
experiences, sentiments, and behaviour that stop the person from interacting rationally.
Psychological barriers, such as attitude, opinion, emotion, and perception are linked to the
psychological state of the person and happen by distrust, lack of attention, envy, premature
assumption, and anxiety. Sometimes the information is understood in a different way as intended
by the communicators from the different cultural background and creates miscommunication.
Several methods such as active listening, use of proper body language, conciseness,
concreteness, courtesy, and correctness can help in surmounting these barriers. Active listening
is when you pay full attention and show interest. For example, a student is present in class but is
not paying attention to the speaker, the student may not understand and learn the context. As the
saying goes that "actions and deeds speak louder and clearer than words", proper body language
and gestures should be used while communicating the language. Focus on the key points, support
the message with fact and figures, and keep it short. Using Grammar and Syntax correctly can
convey and understand the content clearly and easily. Most of all, being respectful to each other
builds a positive and constructive relationship between interactors. It takes many years of
practice to get proficient in these skills.
