This is a short explanation of the terminology used in connection with our

monitoring equipment and safety equipment for two-stroke and four-stroke
propulsion plants.

Alarm/sensor code: is an identification code for the measured point.

The letter code is as follows:

1st letter Following letters

E: Electrical variable A: Alarm
F: Flow D: Difference
L: Level H: High
M: Moisture I: Indicating
P: Pressure L: Low
S: Speed S: Switching, shut down
T: Temperature X: Failure, external
V: Viscosity C: Controlling
Z: Emergency/safety acting
(ISO 3511/I - 1977(E))

Alarm channel no : Refers to the identification number used in connection with the alarm
system. Only specified providing Alpha Diesel supplies the alarm unit, or is responsible for
specifying the scope of sensors.

Designation: Gives a short description of the measured point.

Normal value: Represents average values at Maximum Continuous Rating (MCR).

Set point: The limit at which the pressure switch, thermostat, level switch, relay or sensor is to
be adjusted.

Sensor no: Specifies all alarms and sensors used for the propulsion plant acco rding to a
separate sensor specification list.

Placed: Refers to the location of the alarm/sensor.

Following capital letters are used:

A = On engine
B = On gear
C = In remote control system
D = In tacho converter
E = On separately supplied alarm panel
F=
G = In safety unit
H = Separately installed/supplied

Group alarm: Indicates the alarm group in which the alarm is classified.
The following numbers are used:

1 = Stop main engine 2 = Reduce load

3 = General alarm 4 = Failure in manoeuvre system
5 = Main engine stopped

In some cases 1 and 5 are treated as interchangeable alarm groups, and therefore classified
as group alarm 1.

Remarks: Used for various explanations.

* This mark indicates one of the following:

• Pressure is measured between the main pump and the double non-return valve
• An analog sensor

Description:
List of lubricating oils SAE 30 and SAE 40
4-stroke engines and CPP systems.

Guidance:
The list is to be used only as a guide.
We undertake no responsibility for difficulties that might be caused by the oils.

Use:
The stated lubricants is only to be used in following engine types:

Engine type Engine output and rpm SAE number

27/38 [ 340 kW/cyl. at 800 rpm ] { SAE 40 }

28/32A [ 245 kW/cyl. at 775 rpm ] { SAE 30 }

23/30A [ 160 kW/cyl. at 900 rpm ] { SAE 30 }

Remarks:
The firms are stated in alphabetical order.

In the contractual warranty period for the engine / propulsion plant the lubricating oil should be of a make (brand and
type) which is included in this list.

Any other lub oil will only be allowed provided a written acceptance is given by MAN B&W Diesel A/S, Alpha Diesel

Notes:
Note I : The lub oil with the mark # has proven superior performance in certain severe and localized service
application.

Note II : In case of using the lub oil marked with ¤ in the contractual warranty period - contact MAN B&W Diesel,
Alpha Diesel for further notification.

Note III : In case of operation in cold water it is recommended to use SAE 30 oil for the stern tube system.

Lub oils for 4-stroke engines and CPP system SAE 30 and SAE 40
The oil list states lubricating oils which have been used in a number of Alpha Diesel engines and CPP systems with
satisfactory result and some of the stated lub oil has proven superior performance in certain severe and localized
service application.
In case it is requested to use a lubricating oil not included in the list, Alpha diesel must be consulted.

Reference to the API system should be taken only as a guide, as no current specification system fully cover the
needs and requirements of marine lub oils, for operating on intermediate or heavy fuel oils.

TBN (Total Base Number) indicates the alkalinity of the lub oil and, consequently its neutralizing effect an acids
developed from the sulphur in the fuel oil.The TBN normally reduces gradually with the time in service. The influential
elements are the sulphur content in the fuel oil, the lub oil amount and the amount of refilling due to normal
consumption. After a certain time of operation, the TBN will stabilize at a lower value, the TBN equilibrium. Re-filling
should be with lub oil having initial TBN. See fig. 1.

When selecting a lubricating oil, attention must be paid to the fuel oil sulphur content. When operating on gas oil or
diesel oil, a lubricating oil with TBN as indicated in column 1 of the oil list should be used. When operating on
intermediate or heavy fuel, a lubricating oil with TBN as indicated in column 2 must be used. See fig. 2.

Application
The stated lubricating oils are also allowed for use in Alpha reduction gear, servo unit, propeller equipment and
Woodward governor.

Reduction gear
An oil suitable for use in the Alpha reduction gear must obtain FZG load step 11 (failure load stage). The FZG load
step is stated in the oil list.

Propeller equipment
The specified lubricating oils are generally to be used in propeller equipment. In special cases, we refer to the
specified oil list from suppliers of propeller equipment and stern tube seals.

Woodward governor
The oils stated in the list fulfil Woodward quality requirements.

Lubricating scheme
With regard to above requirements, we recommend that a lubricating scheme proposal is approved by Alpha Diesel.
