Chapter 1
THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

INTRODUCTION
Erreygers (2013) socioeconomic status (SES) is a composite measure of
an individual’s economic and sociological standing. It is a complex assessment
measured in a variety of ways that account for a person’s work experience and
economic and social position in relation to others, based on income, education,
and occupation. Socioeconomic status has been a powerful determinant of
health; as a general rule, wealthy people tend to be in better health than people
of poorer status.
It has always influenced the academic achievement of students. Academic
achievements varies for children from different social backgrounds. Their
academic performance in an outcome of their social status. Previous studies have
shown that Parents Socio-economic Status is strongly associated with students’
academic performance. The study examines the influence of different categories
of socio-economic status on their academic achievement.
Steinmayr, Meibner, Weidinger, Wirthwin (2017) Academic achievement
as measured by the GPA (Grade Point Average) or by standardized assessment
designed for selection such as SAT (Scholastic Assessment Test) determines
whether a student will have the opportunity to continue his on her education. In
addition, the education of parents has an impact of children’s school
achievement. Studies emphasize that education level of parents of successful
students in higher than education level of the parents of unsuccessful students.
Lean and Isai states that the average period of time that parents participate in
education is an important factor in students’ academic success.
Family income is one of the important factors that determine to some
extent the duration that child participates in education. In an educational setting
so strongly based accountability for student in all subgroup. Archibeld (2016),
systems must not only be aware of the problems present when students grow up

in poverty, they must also be aware of willing to implement programs and

initiatives designed to combat the problem and narrow the achievement job,
while ensuring success for students from all economic background.
Leonard (2008) postulated that past discrimination and economic
constraints were factors that contributed to underachievement among minority
students. Ruthstein (2004) averred that common sense would dictate that the
poor achievement was the fault of school. Each child regardless of cultural
background should be given the opportunity to advance academically in schools.
Love, Stiles, Maundry and Di Ramma (2008) argued that the learning of every
child was the collective responsibility of educators.
There are different reasons why a learner gets poor academic
performance. One of the contributing factors is the economic status of the
family. According to Hart of Demand Media each year students attend schools
that represents a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds. Although students of
higher and lower socioeconomic statuses both attend school, the effect of lower
socioeconomic on student achievement is difficult to ignore.
Ocampo (2015) Students of a lower socioeconomic status often face
additional challenges including a dearth of learning resources, difficult learning
conditions and poor motivation that negatively affect their academic
performance. Teacher turnover, limited resources and low academic performance
are all characteristics of schools in lower socioeconomic communities.
Consequently, highly-qualified teachers often avoid such schools by committing
to more school communities, learning low socioeconomic status children with
teachers who often lack expertise in their subjects. Students in lower
socioeconomic communities are more likely to exhibit behavior related learning
problems because they feel as if they do not belong in school due to their
working class background. These feeling of loveliness and inadequacy class
influence the decision to drop out for many students. Ocampo (2015)
Additionally, as low socioeconomic status students become aware of high college
tuition fees, they often lose the motivation to perform well due to their inability

to pay for higher education, ultimately affecting the influence of socioeconomic

status on student’s achievement.
The researchers prompted to conduct the study is to know the effects and
impacts between socioeconomic status and academic achievements of the
students in Gordon College Senior High School Department. In addition, it also
