I. TOPIC:
Teach story comprehension, rhyming, and sight word awareness using the book Patty’s
Pumpkin Patch by Terri Sloat.
II. OBJECTIVES/STANDARDS:
Standard CC.1.3.4.F: Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in
grade-level text, including figurative language.
Standard CC.1.1.K.C: Demonstrate understanding of spoken words, syllables, and sounds
(phonemes); Recognize and produce rhyming words.
Standard CC.1.1.2.D: Know and apply grade level phonics and word analysis skills in
decoding words; Read grade level high-frequency sight words and words with
inconsistent but common spelling-sound correspondences.
Following the teacher’s reading of Patty’s Pumpkin Patch, the student will match word
cards to their corresponding picture cards, as well as match rhyming words with their
pairs (from the book) and identify sight words from the story, using sight words and word
cards to write one paragraph about the story.
III. TEACHING PROCEDURES:
1. Anticipatory Set –
a. Ask student if he/she has ever gone to a pumpkin patch before. Student/teacher
discussion.
2. Development –
a. Introduce book Patty’s Pumpkin Patch. Tell student that we will be paying
special attention to new words, rhyming words, and sight words that the student
already knows as we read the book.
b. Give student new word cards. Have them pay special attention to the story and
point to the cards as they see them in the book.
c. Begin reading.
3. Guided Practice -
a. Once story is finished, have student match new word cards to their corresponding
picture cards. Use teacher guidance as necessary to assist.
b. Once cards are matched, point out that certain word cards are in green. Tell
student that these words have rhyming word partners that need to be found. Have
student match rhyming words with assistance as necessary.
4. Independent Practice –
a. After student finishes matching, have students write one paragraph about the
story using new word cards, sight words, and the book.
8. Closure –
a. Have students read their paragraphs out loud, checking to make sure that their
paragraphs “make sense,” have capital letters at the beginning of sentences,
correct punctuation, and include new words and sight words.
IV. MATERIALS:
✓ Patty’s Pumpkin Patch by Terri Sloat
✓ Word Cards & Picture Cards
✓ Sight Word Cards
✓ Pencil
✓ Paper
V. ADAPTATIONS:
The book will be read aloud to student by the teacher. If student is able to, the student can read
some or all of the pages. When writing the individual paragraph at the end of the lesson, teacher
can help provide sentence structure ideas if student is struggling.
VI. EVALUATION:
1) Formative – Word matching cards and rhyming matches
2) Summative – Written paragraph at end of lesson
VII. REFLECTION:
1) Write an assessment of the students’ performance and mastery in terms of each stated
objective. List each objective’s evaluation separately.
2) Write a general self-evaluation including explanation for success or lack of it. Discuss
what changes might have produced better results and could be used in subsequent
lessons.
