Title IX Discussion

Title IX is a federal civil rights law passed as part of the Education Amendments of 1972. This
law protects people from discrimination based on sex in education programs or activities that
receive Federal financial assistance. Although a law can never guarantee true equality, I think
this law was a good stepping stone for it.

According to a 2015 report from the Association of Student Conduct Administration (ASCA),
community colleges and other two-year institutions are often left out of the discussion of how to
properly prevent Title IX violations, including sexual assault, and how to properly enforce
mandates and legislation that were often designed with four-year colleges in mind. These issues
can be compounded by the fact that community colleges often have fewer resources and are
unlikely to have a dedicated Title IX officer.

The Equity in Athletics Disclosure Act requires co-educational institutions of postsecondary

education that participate in a Title IV, federal student financial assistance program, and have an
intercollegiate athletic program, to prepare an annual report to the Department of Education on
athletic participation, staffing, and revenues and expenses, by men's and women's teams.

What has youth sports become? Discussion

What are some of the effects parental involvement has on youth athletes from the athlete’s point
of view?
- I think that some parental involvements can cause can be resentment. Speaking from personal
experience, I think sports are opportunities for young athletes to find themselves. Too much
involvement can cause the feeling of suffocation. However, that's not to say that parental support
isn't welcomed. I think with everything, there are limits.
Are the coaches to blame?
- I think as coaches, they have a responsibility to be advocates and be there for their athletes. I
don't think coaches are to blame, but they should be able to read a situation and response as
needed.
If you were the coach how would you provide a positive experience for individual players and
the team?
- If I was a coach, I would create a safe space for my athletes.
How involved do you think a parent should be in youth sports?
- I think a parent should support their child and cheer them on in the sidelines, and not
micromanage everything.
Describe your understanding of "burn out" and why are young kids experiencing burn out at
alarming ages?
- I think kids experience burn out quickly because of the idea of "stage parents" where there is a
great amount of pressure towards kids created by parents. This makes it harder for the child to
accept their achievements as they gain them and not beat themselves up when they don't meet
their parent's expectations.
