MODULE 3 (May 24, 2020) : Leading Innovations Transforming Lives
Learning Objectives:
After completing this module, TLE 502 graduate students should be able to:
1. Discuss the issues and challenges in teaching the components of home
economics;

Topic
Issues and Concerns in Teaching Home Economics
Introduction
We all know that Home economics is generally offered in high schools, part of EPP
among grades 4-5 in the elementary level and part of TVL on senior high school
throughout the country. Like other worthwhile movements and institutions, it went through
a struggle to reach its present status, and many individuals had a part in its development.
Home economics is that part of education that has for its major purpose: the
education of youth and adults for successful homemaking, and satisfying home and
personal living. It recognize that these activities are of the utmost importance to everyone
and are necessary for his fullest development and happiness.
In line with this, there are still challenges in teaching the subject.

Recommendations
The majority of the issues and problems that identified in this study were evaluated
as significant in similar studies conducted in 1993 and 1996 (Wicklein, 1993; Wicklein &
Hill, 1996). The uniqueness of the issues and problems facing technology education at
this time in its history may very well be at a point of no return, where solutions found in
the field is to survive. The following recommendations will serve to help guide our
profession through the issues and problems facing us:
Undertake significant efforts aimed at recruiting and preparing new technology
education educators at all levels.
Identify and communicate a clear and understandable purpose of technology
education to all populations,
Reach consensus in curriculum design and development as high priorities.
Evaluation of this data by professional leadership to aid in future planning and
focus of the profession.
Assessment Task:
Based on your own experiences, cite simple challenges that you encountered in
teaching TLE and the measures that you did to solve these issues.
