Ninoy: Not a hero, not even officially

According to Robert D. Tiglao the proclamation did not call Aquino a “hero,” nor did it
explain why a holiday was being declared in his name. The terse six-paragraph text merely said
it was a holiday “in order to commemorate the death anniversary of former senator Benigno
“Ninoy” S. Aquino Jr.” That he is a hero is an interpretation from the fact that only two other
persons have holidays declared in their honor, Jose Rizal and Andres Bonifacio, who were
declared heroes in the same legislation that enacted their holidays.

The late Benigno Aquino Jr. a.k.a. Ninoy Aquino is not a hero; at best he’s just another
opportunistic politician who entered politics to fulfill his personal ambitions at all cost. He is the
classic demagogue who spent his time as an elected public official making himself look good
while his political rivals look bad, using the classic “I’m the good guy and he’s the bad guy”
card.
As you can see, the ultimate motive is patronage politics, paying a debt to the “cult of yellow
ribbon devotees” and not to honor a “hero” who has done something great for the natives of this
archipelago. Take a look at the proponents of this law; they are the ultimate politicians and
patronage politics experts.

And what about the man they imposed upon us to honor? What has he done for the country and
the natives?

Ninoy Aquino was a congressman and a senator and during his time as a member of both
legislative bodies, not a single bill or law was passed coming from him.

All he did was to deliver speeches denouncing Marcos and his martial rule. But the late Lorenzo
Tañada, Jose W. Diokno and Jovito Salonga also did the same. They weren’t given a nationwide
non-working day. All Ninoy did was go to South Korea not as a soldier but as a reporter, but
even a sophomoric journalist could do it. Ninoy did not fight any battle unlike many soldiers
who died in Bataan, Corregidor, Marawi City, and Mamasapano, neglected by Ninoy's son, who
could have done something to save them. All Ninoy did was run for mayor, congressman, then
senator at very young age. But many did the same. His accomplishments were not
unprecedented, much less unsurpassed.
