c) Trees that grow in deserts.
Prickly pear , cactus
d) Trees that grow in marshy areas.
Kendelia and cariops

Q3- Mention one adaptive features of plants that grow in

the following habitats:

a) Marshy areas
Since the soil in marshy areas is full of water, the roots
do not get air to breathe. Hence, the plants develop
breathing roots which grow above the soil in order to
breathe.
b) Deserts
• Large, fleshy stems to store water
• Thorns or spines to reduce water loss.
• Pointed sharp leaves protect cactus from animals
wishing to use stored water.
• Deep roots to tap groundwater.
• Long shallow roots which spread over a wide area
• Plants can survive for years even in drought or less
rainfall.

c) Hills
• Most plants that grow on hills are cone-shaped and have needle-like leaves which
allow rain water and snow to slide off easily.
• Some of these trees have cones instead of flowers.
Hence these plants are also known as conifers.

Q4. Why leaves in cactus plant are reduced to spines?

• Leaves in cactus are reduced to spines in order to prevent loss of water. Pointed sharp leaves protect
cactus from animals wishing to use stored water.

Q5. Why do plants that grow in marshes develop roots above

ground?
• Since the soil in marshy areas is full of water, the roots do
not get air to breathe. Hence, the plants develop breathing
roots which grow above the soil in order to breathe.
In marshy areas, there is poor oxygen content and less
nutrient soil. This results in roots getting less air
to breathe in for the process of photosynthesis. So, in order
to get sufficient air the roots grow upwards.
