0 SUMMARY

The purpose of the experiment was to conduct mass balance and energy balance in
CSTR. The experiment was start by filling the vessel B1 and B2 with 30 L of distilled water.
Then, sodium hydroxide, NaOH and ethyl acetate was prepared, and the solution was poured
into vessel B1 and B2 respectively. The valves were opened and closed according to the lab
manuals. Next, the electric power of the control panel was turn on and the feed flow rate and
temperature were set to 10L for the reactor volume, 200 mL/min for the flowrate and 37˚C
for the temperature. After that, the initial conductivity values were recorded and every 5-
minute interval until constant. The values were recorded until minute 55. Lastly, the total
flow rate of solutions, the concentration of NaOH and the conversion, X was calculated. For
the relationship between Concentration of NaOH and Conductivity, it starts from initial time
(0) and after 5 minutes interval, conductivity (mS/cm) was recorded. The concentration of the
sodium hydroxide (NaOH) of the solution in the reactor was obtain from calibration curve of
the Concentration of NaOH vs Conductivity. Concentration of Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH)
was obtain from the calibration curve which was y = 140x+4. After the value has substitute
value of conductivity into y, the result decrease. The concentration obtained in the result at
the conductivity 7.22 was very low which were 0.023. The conversion, X (%) increases with
time as reaction proceeds. Referring from the figure 3, the overall mass balance for input and
output was not equal. The conversion x (%) obtained in the result at time of 55 minutes was
very low which were 46.14 % and this will be affected the mass balance for the reaction. The

kJ
value for energy balance is -1.4917x10^6 . Based on the energy balance value, it shows
min
that this reaction is exothermic reaction and it shown in the increase of temperature from time
to time.
