Shared Reading Experience

 Student name: Ella

 Date(s) of Shared Reading: 2/11, 2/18, 2/25

 Text used:

o Carle, E. (1987). The very hungry caterpillar. New York: Philomel Books.

 This book was read to Ella once a week for three weeks (3 times). The book was

chosen because of its repetitiveness, engagement, and rich illustrations. On the first

day, I read the story with emphasis on expression, having Ella enjoy and listen to the

book. At the end of the first reading, we discussed how she would feel if she was the

caterpillar and why. Day two I read the book with Ella chiming in on repetitive

parts. We also pointed out “wow words” which went on our vocabulary word wall

and figured out what they meant by using context clues together. The third day, I

encouraged Ella to read with me, but still could only read the repetitive parts and

we reviewed the “wow words.”

 Observations

o Ella thrived off of a read-aloud. Her comprehension was wonderful and she

was very engaged.

o Did great with vocab, was able to use context clues from what she

remembered. She had a great memory

o Related to book to real life event- in Montessori last year when they raised

caterpillars into butterflies in the Spring.

o Could not read by herself, seemed intimidated and needed the support.
