Out of sight,out of mind

The out of sight, out of mind adage can be applied not only to lovers, but lands, cultures,
customs, beliefs, values. The cliché ”out of sight, out of mind” is a cliché for a reason. If
something, or someone, is not actively seeking your attention, it is human nature that we don’t
see this thing as a priority. Often, the proverb is used as a piece of advice, to encourage people to
stay away from a certain person or thing that is upsetting them. If the person stays away for long
enough, this proverb suggests, eventually they will forget about whatever it was that was making
them feel upset.

On the one hand, I think that this is true for every aspect of our life, from that doctor’s
appointment you’ve been meaning to make but haven’t written a reminder for, to that junk
drawer you’ve been wanting to clear out, but haven’t gotten around to because you can quietly
shut it and walk away.

However, staying informed and staying in touch with loved ones is crucial. This proverb warns
us not to lose touch with old friends. Seeing our loved ones all the time online helps us to
remember them. In the technology era, it’s harder to get somebody “out of mind”, because you
have all the apps that are meant to keep us in touch, and even if we forget about somebody we
can easly search them, see their photos and contact them. In this era is much easier to have
distance relationships because we can facetime every minute, stay in touch 24/24 and socialize as
much as we want.

From another angle, another example can be given involving tempting objects. If we are trying to
give up chocolate, it can help to hide away all of the chocolates in the house. The reasoning goes
that if we cannot see them, we will be less likely to want to eat them. Maybe that's how we'll be
able to adapt to a healthier lifestyle.

In conclusion, the proverb “out of sight, out of mind” can be interpreted in many ways, but I
consider that the most important thing is to be organized, to socialize, not to let worries and
problems take us away from each other. The proverb is true but I believe that we should not
adapt because we have only one life and we must live it with people, to enjoy their presence, not
to leave for tomorrow what we can do today because we do not know what tomorrow holds for
us. Therefore, don’t get “out of sight, out of mind”
