Unit 6 – Network Pitfalls

Objectives
After completing this unit, you will be able to:
 Identify at least 3 potential factors that can impact CCTV
connectivity to networks

 Identify at least 3 factors that can impact CCTV bandwidth

requirements

 Identify and describe how different network components

can limit network communications

 Identify and describe 3 computer based tests for network

connectivity

Unit 6 – Network Pitfalls

Potential trouble spots for digital CCTV

 Poor understanding of customer needs and

expectations
 Poor communications with those responsible for the
network system CCTV is to integrate into
 Lack of proper financial budgeting
 Improper product specifications
 Network bandwidth and traffic levels
 Firewall restrictions
 Network addressing
 Network connectivity
 System compatibility

Unit 6 – Network Pitfalls

Bandwidth and storage requirements

 Pre-qualifing network and security requirements for
signal transmission
• Number of cameras required – include remote PTZ
needs
• Level and type of scene activity
• Image resolution requirements
• Video compression options
• Alarm activity and monitoring requirements

Unit 6 – Network Pitfalls

Bandwidth and storage requirements

 Pre-qualifing network and security requirements for
digital storage and archiving
• Number of cameras required – include remote PTZ
needs
• The frame rate of capture (ips)
• Video compression options
• Image resolution requirements
• Amount of recorded data to be saved/archived
• Type of recording durations (continuous, event or
alarm driven)

Unit 6 – Network Pitfalls

Connectivity
 Integrating CCTV cameras and control/monitoring
stations into IT networks
• Obtain node and IP addresses for CCTV
components
• Understand routing and subnet masking issues
• Type of signal required (multicast/unicast)
• Type of transmission medium, bandwidth and
traffic levels/patterns
• Network gateway and firewall restrictions

Unit 6 – Network Pitfalls

Connectivity tests
 ARP (Address Resolution Protocol) – Lookup table
tool used to associate IP and MAC addresses
 IPCONFIG (Internet Protocol Configuration) – Tool
used to find and renew IP addresses on a computer,
router, or other address sensitive device
• Ipconfig /all – This provides all the settings of your
node and information on the network connected to
• Ipconfig /release – This releases the assigned IP
address to the computer connected at that node
point
• Ipconfig /renew – The computer you are on will be
assigned a new IP address

Connectivity tests
 PING – “Pinging” an IP address checks for
communication response between two nodes within a
programmable timeout time frame

Unit 6 – Network Pitfalls

Connectivity tests
 PING – “Pinging” an IP address checks for
communication response between two nodes within a
programmable timeout time frame

Factors that can cause a no response to a ping

• Bad network connection
• The node sending to could be down or off
• A firewall blocking issue
• The ping message is being filtered out
• The communications timeout is set too short

Firewalls
 Can be hardware (i.e. Sonicwall) or software (i.e. ISA)
 Purpose is to restrict network communications in
and/or out of a network domain
 Techniques of firewall protection
• Packet filtering – Most common type. Monitors
packet heading to identify the source and
destination IP addresses. A rules list filters out
specific IP addresses
• Application gateway – Screens out specific types of
applications (such as from FTP or telnet servers)
• Circuit-level gateway – Screens for specific types
of connections (i.e. TCP or UDP) U6 - 11

Firewalls
 Proxy servers can be used to hide the true network
address from other networks
 Firewalls are effective first line of network security

Communicating with IT departments

 What is the network type?
 What type of network is communications used?
 What is the through put (bandwidth) of the network and ports
 What is the required transmission rate for the CCTV system
 What is the network architecture? (hubs, switches)
 Are the CCTV camera within network range of the hub?
 What are the firewall restrictions?
 What are the IP addresses and port numbers for each camera?
 What is the network traffic level and patterns?
