Network cabling terminology

 Ethernet
• Widely used set of protocols for LAN systems that
allows for a diverse variety of cable types
• Ethernet cabling is specified by bandwidth, carrying
distance or specifications, and material type

Fiber Optic

 Benefits:
• Small diameter & light weight
• Immune to electromagnetic and radio
frequency interference, and power surges
• Large bandwidth transmission capabilities
• Long distance carrying capabilities
• Light is channeled in either single mode or
multimode cabling

Unit 5 – Network Transmission Medium
Fiber Optic
 Dispersion
• Light traveling in a straight line covers less
distance than light traveling in a bouncing path
• The time difference multiple light beams reach a
point is called Dispersion
• The type of glass and the surrounding cladding
can impact and help control the amount of light
dispersion

Unit 5 – Network Transmission Medium
Fiber Optic
 Single Mode cable
• Thin glass strand (~ 6-10 microns in diameter)
• Bandwidth is almost infinite (speed of light)
• Preferred application for long distances and high
bandwidth

Unit 5 – Network Transmission Medium
Fiber Optic
 Multimode cable

• Larger diameter glass core (50 – 80 microns)

• Step-index multimode cable – has abrupt change between
glass core and surrounding cladding
• Bandwidth limits ~ 50 Mbps
• Graded-index multimode cable – has gradual change
between glass core and surrounding cladding. This allow
the bouncing light to travel faster than the middle light
beam(s), reducing dispersion
• Bandwidth limits ~ 1 Gbps

Repeaters

 Allows for longer transmission distances than the

cable limits allow
• Receives the digital signal, removes unwanted
noise and regenerates the signal
• Digital electrical pulses uses on/off voltages
• Digital fiber optic uses amplified light pulses
