Trend Report
April 2017
Milan Design Week 2017
Attracting crowds of over 300,000, the 56th Salone del Mobile 2017 celebrated another successful year in design. As Milan
continues to expand through surrounding exhibitions and installations, we are continuing to see that the extra events gain the
most interest.

This year at Milan interactive experiences dominated the show with visitors flocking in their thousands to experience-
orientated events. Some of the main attractions saw the IKEA Festival present visionary living concepts for the future home;
Airbnb took visitors to hidden locations within the city; and COS teamed up with British-based artist duo Studio Swine for
‘New Spring’ a sensory experience. With over 2,000 exhibits brands not only had to fight for attention from visitors but had to
tackle social media; two of the most Instagrammed installations were by COS and LG.

“There continues to be a focus on lifestyle at Milan Design Week with more high fashion brands merging into the interiors
market. Experience and future thinking concepts were really key at the show this year.” Caterina Cocciolo, Trend Bible Trend
Researcher.

The fair played host to the 29th edition of EuroLuce which showcased 450 of the best exhibitors in international lighting
design. Recognised as the global benchmark lighting exhibition, EuroLuce was the centre stage for technological innovation
and design.

This report is broken down into four sections covering trends for Print & Pattern, Surface & Material, Shape & Construction
and Colour.

As technology begins to eliminate the need for as much

storage in the home, we see a cleaner decor aesthetic
emerging.

This story is all about creating a smart home without

compromising on style and homeliness. Decor integrates
smart equipment and harmoniously blends digital technology
into our homes.

Technical fabrics borrow from the world of sportswear, while

linear and grid structures reference the graphic qualities of
the sports court. The gentle pastel palette adds a calmness to
this performance driven story.
SPRING SUMMER 2017 There was continuing evidence of this trend at Milan with soft
matt pastels being used for furniture design and grids were
key for furniture design.
