1. Explain the principle, procedure and calculation involved in the estimation of hardness 10
of water by EDTA method.
2. (a) Describe the softening of water by phosphate and calgon conditioning methods. 5

Calculate the quantity of lime and soda required for softening 50,000 lit of water
(b) containing the following salts: Ca(HCO3)2 = 8.1 ppm, Mg(HCO3)2 = 7.5 ppm, CaSO4= 5
13.6 ppm, MgSO4= 12.0 ppm, MgCl2= 2.0 ppm, and NaCl = 4.7 ppm. (Molecular
weights given: Ca(HCO3)2 = 162, Mg(HCO3)2 = 146, CaSO4= 136, MgSO4= 120 mg,
MgCl2 = 95, and NaCl = 58.5).

3. (a) Explain the process of reverse osmosis for the purification of saline water with a neat 5
sketch.

(b) Briefly explain the following processes for the sterilization of water 5
(i) Ozonolysis and (ii) Chlorination

(i) Temperature, (ii) Humidity, (iii) pH, (iv) Conductance of the corroding medium,

5. (a) Explain the following 5

(b) Explain impressed current cathodic protection method in detail with a diagram. 5

6. Explain the process of electroplating for the manufacturing of copper coated utensils 10
with a suitable diagram. Also explain, why anode and the electrolyte should have
common cation when non-inert anode is used?

8. (a) Explain the construction and working of Ni-MH battery. 5

(b) A coal sample was found to contain the following, C = 80%, H = 5%, O = 1%, N = 2%. 5
Calculate the minimum volume of air required for the complete combustion of 1 kg of
the coal sample.

9. Describe the principle, working of Bomb Calorimeter with a neat diagram and derive the 10
formula for the calculation GCV and NCV with all the necessary corrections.
10. What are conducting polymers? What are the structural prerequisites for a polymer to be 10
conductive? Explain the conduction mechanism of polyacetylene.
11. (a) Illustrate the moulding technique employed for the production of pipes and hoses in 5
detail.
(b) According to the guest lecture, discuss the allotropes of carbon used in energy storage 5
devices.
