Ladislav Zgusta (Urbana-Champaign, Illinois) - Translational Equivalence in The Bilingual D PDF
Introduction
1
The purpose of this p a p e r is to discuss the so-called t r a n s -
lational equivalent and its relation to different types of bilingual
dictionaries. To get the proper c o n t r a s t , various forms of explana
tory equivalents will be mentioned as w e l l .
E :
1 tutoyer ... to thou, to address familiarly
Types of equivalence
E :
6 essentuki ... essentuki (kind of mineral water)
E :
7 hukhuk ... onomatopoeic word used by gamblers
when they shuffle the cards
No-one will fail to perceive that all this is connected with the
problem of the functional equivalence of a translation. A t r a n s -
lation should convey to its reader the same message with the same
aesthetic and other values which are conveyed by the original text.
Since languages differ in all imaginable r e s p e c t s , the translator-
lexicographer must sometimes use means quite different from those
used in the original in order to obtain the same r e s u l t s . If the
different m e a n s do produce the same e f f e c t , the texts are considered
functionally equivalent.
