1. A body of mass 4 kg moves under the action of a force 𝐹

Its speed increases from 2 m s −1 to 5 m s −1 , in a distance of 12 m. Find:

a. the work done by 𝐹,

2. A car of mass 1200 kg travelling along a straight horizontal road accelerates uniformly from
8 m s−1 to 14 m s−1 in a distance of 200 m. If the thrust of the engine is 500 N, find the

3. A particle of mass 10 kg sliding across a rough horizontal plane comes to rest in a distance of
4.5 m. Its initial velocity was 3.5 m−1 . Find the coefficient of friction, 𝜇

4. A particle is projected up a smooth plane, inclined at 60° to the horizontal, with speed 4 m s −1 .
When the speed is 1 m s −1 how far will the particle have travelled up the plane?

5. A small block of mass 𝑚 slides down a rough plane inclined at an angle of 45° to the horizontal.
If the block starts from rest, and has velocity 𝑣 after travelling a distance 𝑥 down the plane, find
an exact expression for the work done against friction, in terms of 𝑚, 𝑔, 𝑥 and 𝑣.

6. A car of mass 2500 kg is driving up a hill inclined at an angle of 10° to the horizontal. If the
resistance to motion is 3.5 kN, and the speed is a constant 20 m s −1, find the power exerted.

7. A car of mass 1000 kg moves along a horizontal straight road, passing through points 𝐴 and 𝐵.
The power of its engine is constant and equal to 15 000 W. The driving force exerted by the
engine is 750 N at 𝐴 and 500 N at 𝐵.

Find the speed of the care at 𝐴 and 𝐵, and hence find the increase in the car’s kinetic energy as it
moves from 𝐴 to 𝐵.

8. A car of mass 1250 kg moves from the bottom to the top of a straight hill of length 500 m. The
top of the hill is 30 m above the level of the bottom. The power of the car’s engine is constant
and equal to 30 000 W. The car’s acceleration is 4 m s −2 at the bottom of the hill and is
0.2 m s−2 at the top. The resistance to the car’s motion is 1000 N. Find:

a. the car’s gain in kinetic energy,

9. 𝐴𝐵 and 𝐵𝐶 are straight roads inclined at 5° to the horizontal and 1° to the horizontal
respectively. 𝐴 and 𝐶 are at the same horizontal level and 𝐵 is 45 m above the level of 𝐴 and 𝐶
(see diagram, which is not drawn to scale).

A car of mass 1200 kg travels from 𝐴 to 𝐶 passing through 𝐵.

a. For the motion from 𝐴 to 𝐵, the speed of the car is constant and the work done against the
resistance to motion is 360 kJ. Find the work done by the car’s engine from 𝐴 to 𝐵.

The resistance to motion is constant throughout the whole journey.

b. For the motion from 𝐵 to 𝐶 the work done by the driving force is 1660 kJ. Given that the
speed of the car at 𝐵 is 15 m s−1, show that its speed at 𝐶 is 29.9 m s −1 , correct to 3
significant figures.

c. The car’s driving force immediately after leaving 𝐵 is 1.5 times the driving force immediately
before reaching 𝐶. Find, correct to 2 significant figures, the ratio of the power developed by
the car’s engine immediately after leaving 𝐵 to the power developed immediately before
reaching 𝐶.
