Abstract
The history of humankind is marked by a relationship with music that includes,
among others, aesthetic, performance, educational, philosophical and health
aspects. The musical activity involves many brain areas and this has attracted
interest of many researchers. Within this interdisciplinary context, including
theories and methodologies of disciplines related to Biology, Musicology,
Ethnomusicology, Psychology and Cognitive Sciences, Biomusicology emerged.
This field of study focuses on the interface between body and
mind, and music. This research area is divided into three main subgroups:
Evolutionary Musicology, Neuromusicology and Comparative Musicology. Thus,
this work aims to present scientific information, from a neurophysiological and
neuroanatomical point of view, mainly on the cognitive functions involved in the
musical experience.
