Weng Shuyang

I have been studied in Cambridge School of Visual & performing Arts (CSVPA) to
make full preparations for undergraduate study. The most valuable things that I learned
were various research methods and ideas development. In addition to searching on the
Internet, I often went out to draw inspiration, like visiting museums to draw sketches.
For example, to complete my first fashion project in CSVPA, I went to Fitzwilliam
Museum to do the research. Selecting two paintings as my inspiration, I learned to
analysis a painting from tones, structure, materials and style. What is more, I was able
to extract the outline, structure or colour from an artist's work. Having equipped myself
with these knowledge and skills, I apply them into my own design as a feedback.

Having returned to China, I plan to take a gap year to study fashion design combing
what I learnt from CSVPA and tastes from domestic fashion markets. I used to do a
collection of works with jump thinking, often integrating new design ideas come up
with suddenly. For example, I studied cubism in a previous project. As for cubism, I
naturally added the element of suit, but did not explain the source of it clearly. Now I
am able to explain the origins of each idea and the connection between inspirations in
my portfolio logically.

Once when preparing for my another project called Friends, I invited two classmates as
my models. They naturally posed gestures like shaking hands, hugging, laying hands
on each other’s shoulders, and I took pictures of them to extract the contour structure I
wanted for further development. Then I would use approaches of mix media or mark
making to embody my inspiration. Also, I knew how to do the illustration and life
drawing there. Moreover, I practiced the whole process from patterning and printing to
garment making.

Now, I am studying in Nottingham Trent University. Here, my biggest harvest is the

mastery of basic courses. For example, printing, cutting, sewing and so on. In my
opinion, the biggest advantage is that I am very patient and can complete the delicate
tasks very well. At the same time, I also experienced a lot of teamwork experience in
this school. This also makes me no longer panic about cooperation and exchange,
especially for international students.

Studying in the UK was evocative for me, and I have adapted to life there, which was
very interesting and unexpected. In the several years to come, I plan to continue my
postgraduate study. Also, I aspire to grasp great internship opportunities. Thus, I am
determined to study fashion design in London, an international fashion capital.
