WORK ALLOTED TO ME
• Minimizing the defects in the paint work,

• Study of various casting defects & their Remedies,

• Study of major causes of breakdown & their preventions.

MINIMIZING THE DEFECTS IN THE PAINT WORK

I was given the task to analyze the defects occuring in the paint job of the tractor and find
the defects occurring & find out the useful solution to minimize it.

 Problem Statement :-

It is impossible to achieve zero defects in the whole painting process. The problem occurs
due to equipment’s, methods used, workers & materials. Therefore, to reduce the defects
or problems, we need to improve the process. The tasks are to study the method that can
reduce the defects or problems.

 OBJECTIVE:-

To reduce the problems and defects that occur at paint process.

 DEFECTS OCCURS IN PAINT WORK ;

 Paint Flow

 Less Paint

 Orange Peel

 Paint Dust

 Pin Holes

 Paint Scratches

 Paint Chip-Off

Page | 43
PAINT FLOW:-

It is the defect in which a flow of paint occurs on the surface. This defect can occur when
excess of paint is sprayed on a surface which maybe a round or vertical surface due to
which the excess paint starts to flow on the surface and create a flowing appearance on
the surface when it dries.

PAINT FLOW

LESS PAINT:-

This defect occurs when any area of the surface is not painted properly. It is due the
defected area maybe hard to reach or a blind spot that do not come under the eye of the
painter.

LESS PAINT

Page | 44
ORANGE PEEL:-

The term orange peel refers to a bumpy coating surface that resembles the surface of an
orange. Orange peel normally is due to poor flow-out and leveling of spray droplets, but
occasionally is caused by surface tension driven flow in the oven. Orange peel rarely
affects gloss , reduces the quality and finish of the paint.

ORANGE PEEL

PAINT DUST:-

This defect occurs because the surface was not properly cleaned before the painting
process, the dust particle on the surface are responsible for this defects as they create
small edgy bumps on the surface on a quite large scale so this defect damages the paint
job.

PAINT DUST

Page | 45
PIN HOLES:-

In this defect small hole takes place on the surface they are very small in size but can be
large in number or can be caused by moisture in the spray guns or unclean surfaces.

PIN HOLES

PAINT SCRATCHES:-

It can occur anywhere at the dismounting line where something can strike the painted
surface and scratch the painted surface it can be overcame by using coverings for the
body parts.

PAINT SCRATCHES

Page | 46
PAINT CHIP-OFF:-

In this defect the paint on the surface starts chipping off. It can be very small but it cannot
be ignored because it can damage the whole paint job. This defect occurs mainly because
of poor paint job done at the surface or maybe any kind of rusting or dusting on the
surface.

So, during my training period, I collected the data of paint defects occurring and being
caught at the quality checks in the month of February. I made a list of all the defects that I
caught and made a list of them. Out of which the top occurring defects in this time period
are as following:-

Defect with part on which it occurred No. of times occurrence during time
period of one month.

Trailer hook paint flow 13

Silencer paint damage 5

Fender edge paint damage 17

Battery cover paint dust 6

Battery cover paint flow 11

So here from the list of defects occurred in the month of February we can see that the
most occurring defects were the fender edge paint damage, trailer hook paint flow and
battery cover paint flow.

 Solutions for the paint defects-

• It is quite hard to get almost zero percent defects in the paint job but we can find
ways to minimize the defects occurring during painting. Some solutions are:-

 The spray guns should be in proper working condition.

Page | 47
 The workers in paint shop should ensure the use of proper amount of
thinners and hardeners.

 Temperature conditions should also be maintained in the oven area.

 For the defect of less paint if the workers can give a little bit more attention
at the rear side while in paint shop then we can minimize the less paint and
some other defects on parts like trailer hook , chassis & battery cover.

 And for the fender edge paint damage, we should ensure the proper
cleaning of fenders before painting because most of the time, the paint
damage at the edges was due to dusting and in some cases it was paint flow.
Also for the better protection of the fender edges the coverings used for the
fenders can be a little large in size.

So we suggested these ideas to the paint shop and they accepted them. These are some
method we find to minimize the defects & to improve the paint finish.

STUDY OF CASTING DEFECTS & THEIR REMEDIES

It is unwanted irregularities that appear in the casting during metal casting process. There is
various reason or sources which is responsible for the defects in the cast metalSome of the
defects produced may be neglected or tolerated and some are not acceptable, it must be
eliminated for better functioning of the parts.

STUDY OF MAJOR CAUSES OF BREAKDOWN & THEIR PREVENTIONS

The most common problems we sees on machinery that can lead to breakdowns is in the
field. The major causes of breakdown of machinery are listed below;

1. Not reading the operator's manual.

2. Improper maintenance.

3. Poor electrical connections.

4. Overrunning machines.

5. Not replacing worn parts.

6. Improper storage

1. Not reading the operator's manual:-

 Some farmers have never even opened the owner’s manual.

 Owner’s manuals cover everything from maintenance checklists to calibration

instructions. Most issues are addressed in the troubleshooting section so farmers can fix
the problems themselves without having to wait for a technician.

2. Improper maintenance:-

 Skipping daily maintenance is another mistake that can cause downtime.

 It is important to grease all lube points daily and check engine oil and fluids such as
transmission fluid etc.

 Owner also should regularly replace fuel filters and check chains, gearboxes and belts for
wear and replace when wear is excessive.

Page | 51
3. Poor electrical connections:-

 This problem is hard to prevent and is becoming more common place as modern
machinery is electronically controlled.

 Cleaning away dust and dirt around the connectors can help. When cleaning, use
compressed air instead of water to keep moisture away from the wires.

4. Overrunning machines:-

 Constantly pushing machines to run at maximum performance or at the top of the

engineering curve can strain joints and cause equipment to die prematurely. "We have
some operators out there that push the machines too hard for too long and try and force
them to do things they weren’t designed for.

 Farmers should run machines just under their intended maximum performance level at
most times to avoid undue stress and prevent premature wear.

5. Not replacing worn parts:-

 When a part on a machine breaks, some customers will replace only that part and not
check or replace other parts that may have caused the initial failure. Examples include
replacing a drive chain when the sprocket was shot or replacing a belt when the pulley
was bad.

 Customers need to replace all the things which need replacement

6. Improper storage:-

 Combines and planters can build up dust and debris, which attract rodents. Rodents gnaw
on wires and the dust itself can interfere with electrical connections.

 Machinery should store inside and cleaning around all electrical connections and other
areas of buildup before parking it inside. Compressed air is better and safer than water for
cleanup.
