This week's class will focus on two topics: researching for assignments and writing paragraphs. For the latter, students will learn about writing topic sentences that state the main idea of the paragraph, and developing paragraphs using the SEXI structure, which includes a topic sentence, explanation, example, and implication.

Week’s focus 1: Researching for assignments (Unit 3)
Notes and explanations will be provided in class.
Week’s focus 2: Steps 9 & 10 (Unit 2)
Steps 9 & 10 are the SAME for both Argument and Discussion essays
Step 9: Writing the topic sentence
Each paragraph has a clear and topic (usually first) sentence.
The topic sentence states the ONE main idea of the paragraph. It is advisable that the key word / phrase expressing the idea in the plan also appears in the topic sentence.
Step 10: Developing the paragraph
A good, clear paragraph reflects the S E X I pattern.
S sentence is the topic sentence created in Step 9. E sentence expands or explains the idea in the S sentence. X sentence provides an example. I sentence points to the consequence or implication of the idea. The S E X I pattern can be extended; for example, SEEXXI or SEEEXXXI A supporting reference can be placed in the E or X position.
