ASSIGNMENT BFC32803: REINFORCED CONCRETE DESIGN II

TOPIC: FOOTING DESIGN

Q1 A cloumn 400 x 400 mm carries an ultimate axial load of 1550 kN and an ultimate loading
moment of 45 kNm. Due to some construction problems, the breadth of the footing in one
direction has to be limited to 2.5 m. As a result, a rectangular footing of 2.5 m x 3.5 m x 0.6 m is
adopted.

(a) Show that the proposed size of the footing is satisfactory if the safe bearing pressure of the
soil is 150 kN/m2.

(b) Design the longitudibal and transverse reinforcement for the footing using Grade C35
concrete, Grade 500 steel bars, and cover thickness of 40 mm.

(c) Check the suitability of the reinforcement provided in (b) against normal shear in the
longitudinal direction and punching shear on a perimeter 2.0 times the effective depth from
the column face.

(d) Check the cracking for the footing.

(e) Provide the full detailing for the footing.

Q2 (a) Describe briefly TWO (2) theories in pile cap design.

(b) A pile foundation needs to be designed for an office building at soft soil area. It is
required to support permanent axial action 4000 kN and variable action 3000 kN
from a 450 x 450 mm rectangular reinforced concrete column. Service load capacity
for the pile is 2000 kN. The diameter of pile is 600 mm.

(i) Determine the suitable number of pile and size of pile cap. Draw the detail
size of pile cap with the exact dimensions.

(ii) Design the main reinforcement of the pile.

(iii) Check all the related shears and cracking for the footing.

(iv) Provide the full detailing for the footing.
