GROUP PROJECT INSTRUCTIONS
Curved beams are special beams designed for various types of application in the construction
industry, the automotive and aerospace industry and other mechanical purposes. In this topic,
students are required to discuss at least two types of curved beams made for different types of
application. The study should include how the analysis of the curved beams are being conducted
through various methods. A theoretical study covering its forces and moments, and the relevant
stresses for design purposes should be included. Students are recommended to look for the
respective design codes or principle guidelines.
Roof shells or dome are a universal roofing system used mainly in a various religious building in
Malaysia such as a Mosque. This type of roofing system is also commonly seen at various types
of indoor and outdoor stadiums. In this topic, students are required to discuss at least two types of
roof shells or dome’s made for different types of application. A theoretical study on the analysis
of roof shells or dome’s should be included covering its forces and moments and the necessary
stresses for design purposes. Students are recommended to obtain the relevant design codes or
guidelines.
Agricultural waste from the palm oil industry and rice husk is available in abundance in Malaysia
and are usually burnt, which causes the emission of carbon dioxide (CO2) to the atmosphere
generating the greenhouse effect. Likewise, the presence of industrial waste is also hazardous to
the environment. Therefore, to ensure a sustainable environment, students are required to identify
the types of agricultural and industrial waste and how these waste can be utilised as partial
replacement of cement and sand in a concrete based building material. The study should include
the various types of testing to verify the suitability of this material. It is strongly advisable for
students to search for published research papers related to this topic.
Concrete/steel composite beams are a commonly used building method in the construction
industry. There are various types of concrete/steel composite beams available in the market now.
Students are required to select at least two types of composite/steel composite beams. Discuss the
different elements from the two beams and show (from its theoretical study) how the analysis of

the beams are conducted. Determine also the necessary stresses for design purposes. Students are
recommended to obtain the relevant design codes for composite design and construction.
Concrete/steel composite columns are a commonly used building method in the construction
industry. There are various types of concrete/steel composite columns adopted and design for
various construction purposes. Students are required to select at least two types of composite/steel
composite columns. Discuss the different elements from the two beams and show (with
description) how the analysis of the beams are conducted. Determine also the necessary stresses
for its design purposes. Students are highly recommended to obtain the relevant design codes.
Water tanks are special structures requiring various parameters for its design considerations.
Furthermore, various shapes and sizes of water tanks are seen available and with different materials
used. However, in this case study, students are required to conduct a study on various types of
concrete water tank and its method of design. Identify the important parameters to analyse a water
tank. Show the theoretical study and how the relevant stresses are determined for design purposes.
It is recommended for students to obtain the design codes for water tank design.
Concrete has good characteristic properties to absorb ballistic load or impact load. To further
understand these properties, students are required to study the various types of ballistic load and
the impact it has on concrete slab structures. A number of failure patterns will be observed
depending on the impact and concrete grade. A study on how concrete slab responds to ballistic
load should be included with reference to past and present research work.
