Definition of Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD)
COD refers to the chemical oxygen demand, which measures the amount of
DO, required by the decomposition of organic matter and the oxidation of
inorganic chemicals like ammonia and nitrite. COD measurements are
commonly made with the samples of wastewater or natural water, which are
contaminated by domestic and industrial wastes. A closed water sample is
incubated with a strong oxidant like potassium dichromate (K 2Cr2O7) in
combination with boiling sulfuric acid (H 2SO4) under a specific temperature for a
specified period of time. COD is related to BOD. But, COD is the only method to
measure the amount of industrial wastes in water, which cannot be measured
under BOD. The amount of cellulose in water is only measured by COD. The
plants which treat wastewater from the commercial operations measure COD.
Difference between Biochemical Oxygen Demand(BOD) and
Chemical Oxygen Demand(COD)
BOD COD
Purpose
Biochemical Oxygen Demand is supposed COD or Chemical Oxygen Demand is the
to measure the amount of food or organic total measurement of all chemicals in the
carbons that bacteria can oxidize. water that can be oxidized
Decomposition
BOD is a biological oxidation process COD is a chemical oxidation process
Test Method
The common test method for BOD is The common method for COD is
method 5210B method 410.4
Test Procedure
BOD is determined by incubating a COD is determined by incubating a
sealed water under specific closed water sample with a strong
temperature sample for five days and oxidant like potassium dichromate
measuring the loss of oxygen from (K2Cr2O7) in combination with boiling
the beginning of the test. sulfuric acid (H2SO4) under specific
temperature for a specified period of
time.
Time Taken For Determination
Five days are taken for the COD is usually measured and the test
determination of the BOD is simple and easy to perform with the
right equipment and can be done in 2
hours.
Permissible Limit Of Test
The permissible limit of BOD is 30 The permissible limit of COD is 250 to
mg/L 500 ppm
Value Of Measurement
BOD value is lower than the COD COD value is always greater than the
value BOD value. Therefore, the more
organic material can be oxidized by
COD
Oxidation Ability
Biological oxidation is capable of Industrial sewage is only degraded by
oxidizing natural organic detritus and COD. But, COD does not measure the
organic waste in the water. oxygen consumption of acetate
Test Water Sample
Can only be used to test water from Can be used to test water from industrial
wastewater treatment plants that do not and domestic waste water
contain toxic industrial waste
Conclusion
BOD value is always smaller than the COD COD value is always greater than the BOD
value of a particular water body. BOD value of a particular water body. COD
measures the oxygen demand for the measures the oxygen demand for the
decomposition of organic material by the decomposition of both organic and
microbes in the wastewater inorganic materials in wastewater
