I highly recommend a day
out at the International
Bomber Command Centre
on Canwick Hill – a brilliant
memorial and exhibition to
the courage, determination
and sacrifice of our air
and groundcrew during
the darkest days of the
Second World War.
The enormous strides in
science and technology that
have enabled development
of Air Power over the
nationally and locally
where we will be able to
commemorate, celebrate
and inspire: locally we will
commemorate through our
annual exercising of the
Freedom of Lincoln in April;
we are already planning to
celebrate our annual Friends’
& Families’ Day in June; and
throughout the year we can
inspire through our Youth
Engagement and STEM
program events. Nationally
too, we will be involved in
the big set-piece events in
London, including a parade
and flypast planned for
July. I strongly encourage
all of you to play an active
part in RAF100 – I’m not
planning to be around for
the next one in 2118 so I’m
looking forward to making
the most of this one!

been recovering from the
engineering challenges of
2017, force generating on
NATO Assurance missions
over Europe, and we wait to
hear what awaits them; XIII
Sqn and 39 Sqn, delivering
on ops consistently since
it was acquired under
an Urgent Operational
Requirement, has just passed
the milestone of its 100,000
flying hours in support of
Op SHADER, and this should
continue for the foreseable;
14 Sqn have recovered from
Op SHADER for a period of
regeneration – completing
some 9000 hours in support
of Op SHADER and are
prepared to deploy when
required; 51 Sqn, and the
Rivet Joint have been
declared as Fully Operational
Capability are prepared
to deploy as required this
year. This will be an exciting
year for the Force Elements
and the Station with new
capabilities for 14 Sqn, new

Howzat for a season?
After a hugely
successful 2016 with
the RAF Waddington
Cricket Club making
a clean sweep of all 5
available trophies, 2017
saw the Club continue
its success landing 4 of
the 5.
T
he first trophy up for
grabs was the Regional
T20, with the Finals Day
hosted by Blidworth CC. A
three-team round robin was
on the cards, but unfortunately
RAF Cranwell were forced to
drop out at the last minute.
This left just Waddington and
Digby to lap up the generous
hospitality on offer, which did
not disappoint, and commence
battle in the resplendence
of the Club’s cricket ground.

Although Digby showed
early signs of resistance,
Waddington won through in
comprehensive style. Trophy
number one in the bag!
Having retained the Regional
T20 trophy, Waddington went
on to represent the East of
England Cricket League (EECL)
in the RAF T20 competition at
RAF Vine Lane, the historical
home of RAF cricket. RAF
Northolt and RAF Boulmer
were the opposition, and
after an easy victory over RAF
Boulmer, RAF Waddington and
RAF Northolt met in an eagerly
anticipated final between
two strong sides. Waddington
batted first and posted an
extremely competitive total
of 173 from their 20 overs.
‘Job done’ most would have
thought but keeping ahead of
the required run rate, Northolt
knocked the total off with 8
balls to spare in what was a
thrilling affair for the neutral.
This was the only blemish
on Waddington’s record
for the season; having to
relinquish the RAF T20 trophy
to deserved winners.
Although the trophy evaded
Waddington’s cabinet this
season, the team will be looking
to make amends in 2018.
In the EECL league, RAF
Waddington were struggling
in 3rd place towards the
end of the season. However,
following a concerted effort
from players to fulfil 3 fixtures
in 7 days at the back end of
the season, culminating in
the thrashing of Marham on
the last day, RAF Waddington
snatched the league from
RAF Marham’s clutches by
a margin of only 4 points.
As holders of the RAF Cup,
RAF Waddington received
a bye to the quarter-final
and then came up against
local rivals RAF Digby in the
semi-finals. The match, which
was initially scheduled to
take place at RAF Vine Lane,
was eventually relocated to
Blankey CC’s ground. In a
fine village setting on a hot
summer’s day, Waddington
fielded a strong side with the
bowling attack setting about
the Digby batting line up.
Again, Digby showed early
signs of defiance but wickets
fell regularly and they
eventually succumbed to 82
all out. After tea, Digby went
out confidently and thought
the possibility of a surprise
win was on the cards by taking
early wickets but the relatively

Some 17 of my 31 years’
service have been spent
at RAF Waddington
during which time I’ve
completed a wide variety
of flying and flying
related tours here.
I
ndeed, when I arrived for my
first tour here in 1991 there
was even still hair on my
head and a Vulcan flying under
RAF ownership! I lived in Single

my wife and 2 children, joined
more recently by a recalcitrant

Lincolnshire as my professional
and family home. I was
therefore delighted to return to
‘Waddo’ in September 2017 as

ISTAR FHQ where, as well as P-8,

Surveillance, I’m responsible
for Programme ATHENA.
Many of you will have heard of
Programme ATHENA. Equally,
I’m aware that there is a degree
of ‘transformation programme
fatigue’ across the Service
due to the sheer number of
them. So what is ATHENA,
what makes it different and
why should you care? In
short, ATHENA is seeking
to significantly improve the
quality of life and operational
efficiency of the ISTAR Force.
That means that, while ATHENA
is inevitably Waddington
centric, it extends far beyond

56(R) Sqn
Owing to 56(R) Sqn’s
historic connection with
the town of Annoeullin,
the Sqn was invited to
attend the Armistice Day
Remembrance service
on 11th November 2017.
T
he connection dates back
to the 11th May 1917,
when Capt Albert Ball
VC crashed and died in a field
close to the town of Allenes Les
Marais. His body was taken to
the German military cemetery
in Annoeullin as the area was
under German occupation at
the time. He was buried in the
cemetery and remains there to
this day under a grave-stone
commissioned especially by
his father, the Lord Mayor of
Nottingham at the time.
Since the time of the crash,
the town have annually
honoured Capt Ball on
the day of his death. 2017
marked the centenary of the
crash and consequently a

Remembrance Day. 56(R) Sqn
was invited to attend several
events throughout the day.
The day began with a number
of short readings at the crash
site itself, with the Mayor of
Allenes Les Marais and OC
56(R) Sqn each giving a short
address. The Sqn Standard was
paraded here and the local pipe
band played a number of tunes.
Following the readings at the
crash site, the parade returned
to Annoeullin where the Sqn
marched through the town,
led by the pipe band and
the town’s own brass band.
The Sqn was joined by
members of the Gendarmerie,
local dignitaries, the
family of Capt Ball and
local school children.
The parade marched to the
town war memorial, where the
Sqn took part in the annual
act of remembrance before
moving into the adjoining
cemetery where Capt Ball
is buried. Here OC 56(R) Sqn,
the Mayor and the family were
afforded the opportunity to lay
a wreath at his grave. A short
remembrance service was
also held at the German war
memorial in the cemetery.
Once the act of remembrance
was complete, the Sqn was
invited to attend a drinks
reception and lunch hosted
by the Mayor of Annoeullin
and the local branch of ancien
combattant. Here the Sqn was
treated to a 7-course meal
interspersed with dancing.
It was an extraordinary event
and no one on the Squadron
could have predicted the
extent to which the town
welcomed and hosted us.

Morocco, Saudi and UAE.

he aim of the project
was to teach the
children the importance
of Remembrance Day and
the significance of poppies.
The Heritage Centre hosted
all parties with around 220
children visiting over four
separate days. AHL was
represented by Mrs Sue Miller
and Mrs Nicky Jones.
Ruth gave an overall brief on
what the project was trying to
achieve. The children would
make over 500 poppies that
would be used to build a
poppy tunnel at St Michael’s
church and be displayed on
the World War One graves in
the churchyard.
The Heritage centre volunteers
showed one class around the
Heritage centre whilst the
other class was busy working
on the poppies with Ruth,
Sue and Nicky. The volunteers
didn’t realise that their art and
crafts skills would be needed

in the afternoon to hot glue
the poppies together with glue
guns. After a detailed health
and safety brief the volunteers
proceeded to burn themselves
regularly in the pursuit of the
perfect craft poppy!
Ruth also visited the school
to make sure all age groups
and indeed all the children
from All Saints were actively
involved in the project. The
poppy tunnel was built at the
rear of the church by Ruth, Sue
and Nicky and the graves were
dressed appropriately and both
looked amazing.
A huge thanks to Ruth, Sue and
Nicky for all their hard work and
for making the project happen.
The last words must go to the
children from Waddington
All Saints whose behaviour
throughout was exemplary
and whose enthusiasm and
smiles made this project
come together.

Christmas Party
Established in 1920,

Association (NFA) is a
national tri-service
charity which
support those who
have ‘taken a knock’
whether physically or
psychologically while
serving their country.
T
hey do this by providing
‘comfort, cheer and
entertainment’ to
veterans and serving personnel
in the form of Royal parties,
holidays, outings and lunches,
and for those unable to travel,
concerts and televisions.
On 7th December 2017 WO
Marshall (RAF Wittering) and I
had the privilege of assisting
with the NFA Christmas Party
at St James’ Palace in London.
Being the first event of this type
I had attended, the support
and advice of WO Marshall (a
seasoned NFA regular) was of
great benefit. After a brief and
tour of the impressive area of
palace to be used, we were
tasked with final preparations.
At this stage we discovered our
roles for the party itself where I
would be assisting with hosting
a table which included two
serving Royal Marines, veteran
Grenadier Guards and serving
RAF; tri-service indeed.
After introductions, the
benefit of such gatherings was
immediately apparent with
guests bonding over shared
experiences old and new, all to
the accompaniment of table
magicians, balloon modellers,
live music and of course food.
Before we knew it, HRH Duchess
of Gloucester had arrived and
visited all tables to meet the
guests which undoubtedly
further raised spirits prior to
a grand finale of comedians,
dancers and singers. At this
stage we assisted guests with
finding seats, especially those
with mobility issues some of
whom bravely withstood our
wheelchair driving.
Having had the honour of
assisting the NFA family
and witnessing the value of
their work first hand, I would
encourage all to give them a
thought next time a charity
event is being organised.

Expands support service to
personnel and their partners
experiencing anxiety or depression.
New services to support
the emotional wellbeing
and mental health of
RAF personnel are being
launched this year by the
RAF Benevolent Fund.
T
he RAF’s leading welfare
charity is expanding
its partnership with
Anxiety UK to cover serving
RAF men and women as
well as those who have left
the service. This includes
both regulars and reservists,
as well as their partners.
Those struggling with
anxiety or depression will
have access to an Anxiety
UK helpline for emotional
support, self-help material
and subsidised membership.
This includes free membership
to Headspace, an online
mindfulness programme
aimed at helping people to
have calmer minds Reservists
and partners of serving RAF
men and women are also able
to attend therapy sessions.
Alison Wyman, Head of Welfare
Programmes and Development
at the RAF Benevolent Fund,
said: “As the RAF’s leading
welfare charity, the RAF
Benevolent Fund knows only
too well the stresses and strains
life in the Armed Forces can
put on personnel and their

year, the RAF Benevolent
Fund’s partnership
with the relationship
counselling service
Relate that has been so
successful the service
is being extended to
include veterans and
their partners.

o date more than 5,000
serving personnel have
taken up the Fund’s offer
of six free Relate counselling
sessions and the effects have
been life-changing. The service
is now open to RAF veterans
and their families and includes
access to a free online, Building
Stronger Families course, as
well as subsidised mediation
sessions for couples going
through separation or divorce,
and family counselling.
Feedback from RAF servicemen
and women and their partners
who have taken up the sessions
is incredibly positive, with
everyone who was asked saying
they would recommend the
service and they felt better
able to cope with difficulties
they might face in the future.
One client said: “I’m not sure we
would still be together or able
to communicate had we not
decided to have these sessions.”
Another added: “Although
initially apprehensive to
attend any Relate sessions,
it has definitely been more
than worthwhile for both my
own personal progression
as well as my relationship.”

could have hoped...
F
ollowing an
announcement by
Secretary of State
for Defence during a visit
to Albania in 2016, 8 Force
Protection Wing were
tasked with identifying
where in Albania RAF Force
Protection could conduct the
Defence Engagement.
As the lead for the Royal
Auxiliary Air Force Regiment
Annual Continuation Training,
the Wing identified an
opportunity to combine the
training with the Defence
Engagement. Following this
the Wing Headquarters, which
at the time consisted of only
the Officer Commanding and
an Operations officer, set about
putting together a plan which
would deliver meaningful
continuation training for the
reserves and which met the
strategic Defence Engagement
narrative for the region.
As the plan grew, it became
evident that to facilitate such
an ambitious task, a number
of enablers would be required
during the deployment. It was
the ambition of the planning
team that, where possible,
these should be drawn from
other reservist specialisations.
With this in mind the exercise
grew exponentially as first
the RAF Police Reserve
were included and then

other trades and branches
were incorporated in to the
exercise construct. In addition
to the training for the Royal
Auxiliary Air Force personnel,
the Albanian Armed Forces,
specifically the Albanian 3rd
infantry Battalion, requested
Force Protection training from
the Wing in preparation for their
deployment to Afghanistan
where they would be providing
Force Protection to a number
of NATO assets. As the Albanian
3rd Infantry Battalion are
responsible for the defence of a
NATO southern flank airfield at
Kuçové, the exercise focussed
around that area.

The exercise was broken in to
two distinct phases. Phase 1
focussed on refresher training
for the reservists and provided
safety confirmation training to
the Albanians.
Phase 2 was the exercising
phase, which focussed around
the defence of Kuçové where
the UK and Albanian personnel
work alongside one another
to provide Force Protection at
the Air Base and dominated the
ground around the village of
Ura Vajgurore. Whilst the airbase
activity alongside the Albanians
was challenging and realistic,
the largest benefit to the
training audience came from
the patrols through and around
Ura Vajgurore.
Personnel were able to
patrol through the village
and surrounding industrial
and agricultural area where
they encountered the civilian
populous, the local police and a
number of role players. This and
busy complex terrain cannot be
replicated anywhere other than
on operations and afforded the
personnel a realistic insight
in to the challenges faced
on deployment.
Although this exercise was
designed to challenge the
Reserve personnel, the realities
of delivering a combined
Defence Engagement event
and reservist exercise dislocated
from UK support challenged the
project team as well. Many of
the complexities of delivering
this exercise could not have
been foreseen, such as the food
delivery being impounded
by the Italian authorities
and once released the ferry
transporting the food breaking
down. In addition, one of the
coaches used to transport
troops from the exercise area
caught fire, the aircraft to
support our return journey were
cancelled, the procurement
card was cancelled because
the authorisers thought
expenditure in Albania
was suspicious, one of the
translators didn’t turn up in the
RAF Regiment reserve gunner

through Ura Valaurore.
