f you haven’t already, you may soon hear the
story of Ted Williams, the homeless man from
Ohio with the Golden Voice.
Mr. Williams is 53 years old and for the past de-
cade had been living in homeless shelters and on
the streets, struggling with addictions to alcohol
and drugs – cocaine and crack.
In his past life, he said he went to broadcasting
school and used his deep baritone to emcee events
and work on radio.
Claiming to be free of his addictions for the past
two years, he stood by a highway off-ramp with a
hand-scrawled cardboard sign, asking for donations
to hear his ‘gift.’
A reporting team from the Columbus Dispatch
drove up to where Williams was panhandling earlier
this week, interviewed him and posted a video on-
line. And instantly, Mr. Williams’ life changed, from
sleeping in a tent to being interviewed on the Today
Show to being reunited with his 92-year-old mother.
He has received dozens of job offers, including ones
from Kraft and NFL Films. The NBA’s Cleveland
Cavaliers also offered him a job, and a house.
All of this not because of his voice, for it has never
left him, but because of the internet – YouTube, Fa-
cebook and Twitter. Mr. Williams now has more in
common with Susan Boyle and Keyboard Cat than
Casey Kasem.
It is difficult to digest this type of viral celebrity.
But clearly, Mr. Williams has a unique talent and
a fascinating, if not sad story, which has resonated
with people. It helps that Mr. Williams is gracious
with an endearing smile. He seems genuinely grate-

Big win
On Boxing Day, Pitt Meadows resident Jon Scholten, 72, checked the numbers on
his Lotto 6/49 ticket and realized he’d matched all six – earning him $3,270,475.30.
Instead of telling his family – which includes a wife, six children, and seven grand-
children – of the big win, he slid the ticket under a rug and said nothing for three
days. “I think I just needed some time to let it sink in. It won’t change me. I already
have everything I need.”

New Year’s resolutions?
Could it be that we need a litany of terms to
accommodate the sheer volume of last year’s
screw-ups?
For gardeners, in particular, nothing seems
to embody our annual redemption better than
a newly delivered seed catalogue. Rife with
that fresh catalogue smell, we hold in our
hands the hopes of this year’s garden, with all
our dreams and aspirations lying between the

of rainy weather, ravenous caterpillars and
thieving birds – but even these will be long
forgotten by the time next year’s seed cata-
logue arrives.
Of course, not every seed catalogue is cre-
ated equally, and for those of you who actually
believe that you’re getting the 40-foot tomato
vines, two-headed watermelons or one-pound
strawberries that you’ve sent away for, you’re
probably going to be somewhat disappointed.
For the more scrupulous, there are many
reputable seed houses and B.C. is home to
some of the best. Mike Lascelle photos
