Very good class, so today were going to

discuss a new type of verb.

Modal Verbs

So, class! what is a modal verb?

Modal verbs are sometimes referred to as
modal auxiliary verbs because they help
other verbs.
Very good! Modal verbs are used to indicate
ability, possibility, probability, permission,
request and obligation.

Using the modal verbs, we may, for example,

ask for permission to do something, grant
permission to someone, give or receive
advice, make or respond to requests and
offers, give instructions or orders, express
duty or obligation etc.

Listen class, before we proceed let’s first

have the important grammar aspects.

In modal verb, their should be one modal in a

single verb phrase. (examples are given
during discussion)

In tenses, all modals can refer to the

immediate present or the future
For example, I can call him today / I can call
him tomorrow).

When asking questions, we do not use do or

does in the beginning of the sentence. Do or
does is an example of auxiliary verb, if you
use do or does, modal verb is not needed in
that manner.

Modal verbs also do not have progressive

form. But we can put the verb that follows the
modal into the progressive form. (examples
are given during discussion)

In a negative formed, not is added after the

modal. In informal spoken English not is
often reduced to n’t. (examples are given
during discussion)

Did you understand class on how are you Yes Sir!
