Talking to Your Child About Race -

It is my hope that you will find this useful

Dear Bishop Families -

As we are now into the second week of June, with two weeks remaining in the school
year, we find ourselves in a very different place than we are used to. There are a lot of
emotions we are feeling including a great sense of pride in all that we have
accomplished this year and that feeling of loss for what we are missing. Over the next
two weeks, the Bishop staff and administration will be working with our students on
activities that will allow for a sense of closure on the year and a look ahead at what is
to come in the next grade level.

I ask that you read this Weekly Update in its entirety, as this is a comprehensive look
at the last weeks of school.

I hope this finds you and your family well.

A Message From Our Dedicated, Awesome Library

Staff

Dear Bishop Community,

It has been some time since you heard from us in this Bulletin, although we have been
active in your children’s Google Classrooms throughout the past few months.

We have been thinking of you, and wanted to reach out now with two very different
messages:

1. Since we believe so strongly in the power of children's books, we have posted

some age appropriate materials (including a number of read alouds), about
Racism and Civil Rights on the Bishop Library Website that you may find useful
as the starting point for important conversations. Some materials are posted
directly, but there is a password to access others, because we would like to
ensure students are viewing them with an adult to provide context and
support. It is b3ar5. The link to the website
is https://sites.google.com/arlington.k12.ma.us/bishop-library/welcome-to-
the-bishop-library?authuser=0.
2. We would like to ask all families that are LEAVING the Bishop community, to
please bring in any Bishop Library books that you have at home when you
come to school next week to collect your child’s belongings. There will be a
way to drop them off in the drive by line. If you are not sure which books
belong to the Bishop library, we are happy to let you know. Please email us at
either avaishnaw@arlington.k12.ma.us or JBloch@arlington.k12.ma.us.
Remember that our library books are typically covered in some sort of plastic
and have a barcode on the front that says “Bishop Media Center”. We wish you
all the very best luck in your new schools next year!

If your family will be back at Bishop in the fall, we ask you to please KEEP our books
safe at home with you, and we will collect them later.

We hope that you are all staying safe. We thank you for your cooperation, we are
thinking of you all, and we miss you and your children!

Best wishes this summer, Alison Vaishaw and Justine Bloch

Summer Reading
Program
Thanks to Pam Watts-Flavin and her team at
Robbins Library for organizing an online Summer Reading Program this year. We have
attached two pages that explain the Summer Reading program for kids through the
Arlington Libraries. Included in the information sheets are: a description of summer
reading, how to sign up for summer reading, a summer reading chart, how to access
e-books and e-audio and other great stuff that they have on-line, and some links and
information about some of the great programs that they are offering through the
libraries this summer. Please watch their Kids website at robbinslibrary.org.for more
times and places to get free books! We strongly encourage all of our Bishop Bears to
take advantage of this wonderful opportunity. We are very fortunate to have a town
library that is dedicated to our young readers and they never disappoint. Enjoy!!

Summer Help Needed in the Bishop

Garden
Hello Bishop Community
-
Audrey Hepburn once said 'To plant a garden is to believe
in tomorrow’ and at the Bishop School garden we are planting crops for a better
future to come. Our typical garden programming includes several lessons where
students plant seeds in the spring, care for them until summer vacation, and return in
the fall to marvel at how the garden has grown and harvest their crops. Students
weren’t able to plant anything in the garden this spring, but we are preparing the
beds so garden lessons can continue in the fall if conditions allow. Principal McAneny
has repaired the beds, HomeHarvest has filled them with compost, seeds and
seedlings, and we are looking for volunteers from the Bishop School community to
help water the garden over the summer.

No gardening experience is necessary, just a desire to spend time outside nurturing

veggie seedlings. Some crops we’ll need for our lessons in the fall, but others will be
available to share as thanks for your help. For more information and to sign up for a
week of watering, please visit our Google doc here: https://tinyurl.com/ydc53tbn
