Workshop on PCB Designing

and ARDUINO Simulation

Organized by : AUST IDC

Prepared by : Istiak Mahmud

Workshop Overview

• Why PCBs?
• Terminology of PCBs
• Software Walkthrough
• PCB Fabrication Steps and Fabrication companies
in Bangladesh

Page 3

What is a PCB?
• Printed Circuit Board
• Electronic Board that connects circuit components

Prepared by : Istiak Mahmud

Page 4

Why PCBs ?
• Limited Alternative: Breadboard (messy in case of
large circuits), Vero-board etc.
• Custom Design is possible
• Compact Design is possible (High Density)

Board Technologies

Board Materials:
 
Epoxy and Fiber Glass

Layer Structure:
• Copper layers: allows
tracks to cross
• Surface layers: Solder Mask,
Silkscreen printing Components, solder mask, and
silkscreen layers on a PCB

Parts of a PCB

• Component Packages
• Pads
• Copper Tracks
• Vias
• Top Layer
• Bottom Layer

Page 8

Component Packages
• Components are the actual devices used in the circuit.
• I/O ports, including power supply connections, are also important
in the PCB design.

Pads
• Location that components connect to.
• Components are soldered to the pads on the PCB.
• Pads will connect to traces.

Page 10

Copper Tracks
• Tracks connect two pads, or a pad and a via, or two vias together.
• Tracks widths depend on the currents that flow through them.
• Equivalent to wire for conducting signals

Page 11

Vias
• Pad with a plated hole connecting traces from one layer of
board to other layers.

Types of vias Through-hole vias

Top Layer

• Most of the components

reside on the top layer
• Fewer or no copper tracks on
the top layer
• Components are soldered to
the pads on the top layer of
PCB in case of SMT
packages

Prepared by : Istiak Mahmud

Page 13

Bottom Layer

• Few or no components on
this layer.
• Most of the tracks are on
this layer.
• Most of the soldering are
doneonthislayer.

Page 14

Solder Mask
• Protect copper tracks on outer layers from corrosion
• Prevents solder from binding between conductors and thereby
creating short circuits

Silkscreen
• Printing on the solder mask to designate component locations
• Readable information about component part numbers
and placement.

Costs of PCB Manufacturing

Fixed Cost:
- PCB manufacturers will charge a fixed cost per PCB (100 BDT or more)
- Does not depend on the size of PCB
- One kind of processing fee

Variable Cost:
- Depends on the area of the PCB (4-20 BDT per square inch)
- Depends on whether you want single-sided PCB or double-sided PCB
- Depends on whether you want solder masking or not
