I posted the following on another forum yesterday, because my customer was looking for some
quick results and it's the weekend so I didn't expect DDL engineers to be online.
So far, I've only had one reply, suggesting it is a corrupted P-List. I think it's weak/bad heads,
extensive media damage, and probably firmware corruption because of bad media in the SA. Mainly,
I was looking for guidance on how to properly diagnose the problem, to improve my diagnostic
abilities. It would also be nice to know how to fix it.
I have told the customer that I will return the drive in a couple of days, after I've had more
feedback to my posts, at which time he will probably take it to a more experienced DR lab. Any
insights you can offer in the meantime, will be much appreciated.

severe media issues but the head test results are also concerning. If it has three platters (SN
W2Fxxxxx ), why would both heads 3 & 4 have such low resistance values? Faulty preamp? The
SMART attributes are so bad, it’s a wonder this drive even ran at all; I question their reliability and
suspect firmware problems may be behind the horrendous numbers (although the slip list was
*really* long, suggesting it was crap when it left the factory).
Diagnostic guidance (versus just a conclusion) would be most helpful. Thanks for your insights.
Larry

Thanks for the replies and offers of help. I won't be able to work on it for a few hours, but will try
the MCMT and DOS fix later today and let you know how it goes. I'll have to read up on those fixes;
do they work in Safe mode?
