Response of RC/RL/RLC circuit
(Transient Analysis)
Before a circuit (or machine) arrives at the steady-state condition of operation, the circuit (or machine)
passes through a transition period. The period required for the currents and voltages to adjust themselves to
their steady state condition is called transient period. The mathematical expression for the voltage and
current during transient period is not same as that of steady-state condition. These additional term is called
transient term. They are usually of short duration. Although they are of short duration, they cause operating
problem.
Step response
When the dc source is suddenly applied to RC/RL/RLC circuit, the voltage or current source can be modeled
as a step function, and the response is known as a step response.
The step response is the response of the circuit due to sudden application of a DC voltage or current source.
Natural response
The natural response of a circuit refers to the behavior (in terms of voltages and currents) of the circuit itself,
with no external sources of excitation. A source free circuit occurs when its DC source is suddenly
disconnected. The energy stored in the capacitor or inductor is released to the resistor.

If opening the switch to move it to another position will cause such a rapid discharge in stored energy, how
this can be solved? The solution is to use a network such as-
