An antenna is needed in such a way that it fits on a fixture in a missile.

The available area is 10cm

X10cm X 1cm at 900 MHz. There are no restrictions on gain but size is of utmost importance. Design
an antenna for the given requirement, also select a suitable substrate (give proper reason for
selection) and give design details with reasoning and diagram so that a technician can design it.
Justify the size of this antenna with respect to normal RMSA (Design RMSA at same substrate value
and give comparative parametric analysis).

Soln:

For the specified antenna, the preferred type of antenna would be a RMSA with a Single Shorting
Post at the corner, because firstly, we have a design constraint and a normal MSA would be much
larger to fit in the specification we will consider L=W

30
f o= GHz
4 ( Le +W e ) √ ∈e

Given to us is f o=900 MHz

Let’s assume our ϵ r=4.4∧h=1.6 mm

300∗108
We know that, λ=c / f = =33.3cm
900∗106

In a compact MSA with short post at a corner, the resononat frequency is evaluated as

Le + W e =λ / 4

Considering L=W , our above equation becomes

2 Le =λ / 4

Le =λ / 8

∴ Le =4.16 cm

Now to calculate actual physical length, we will use the following formulaes

Le =L+ Δ LW e =W + Δ W

Assume ϵ e =¿ 4

Then,

0.16∗0.9
4.16=L+
√4
L=W =4.08 cm
Feed point can be roughly 6.5cm

Gain would be roughly 4dBi

To design a normal MSA, L and W would be roughly 16.67cm and would have a gain of about 4-6dBi

Parameter L & W (cm) Area(cm2) Gain (dBi) Bandwidth

Shortened 4.08 16.64 4 Increased
MSA
Normal 16.67 ~280 4-6 Decreased
