show some discoloration around the
joints due to welding. Finishes available to
remove discoloration include sandblasting
and electro-polishing, the latter being used
where bright finish is desired. Shot blast-

since these operations can cause iron
contamination which, if not removed, will
cause rusting and discoloration of the sur-
face. Such contamination can be removed
by passivation. Electro-polishing leaves a
passive surface. The swage-locked and
press-locked processes will not show
discoloration due to welding.

spaces of the grating, yet I-bar swage-locked is lighter weight

and less costly than a rectangular bar grating with the same bar
thickness.

Press-Locked Grating

Press-Locked Bar Grating is often desirable because of its

clean, smooth look and excellent lateral support. It exhibits
the same strength, long life and openness as welded grating,
although it is not recommended for rolling loads. Instead of
welding the joints, tremendous hydraulic pressure is used to
bond the two close-tolerance slotted bars together. Permanent
locking is achieved by forcing the deep cross bar into the
notched bearing bars.

This system of interlocking, perpendicular bars, provides a

smooth, clean look ideal for architectural applications such as
grilles, dividers and screens. It is used in the same structural
applications as its welded steel and rectangular aluminum
counterparts. Materials include carbon steel, stainless steel and
aluminum. Spacing ranges from 7/16” (7 space) to 1-3/16” (19
space).

Close-Mesh Grating

Close-mesh gratings are similar to Aluminum I-Bar, Aluminum

Rectangular and Press-Locked gratings except that the
spacing of the bearing bars are close. These are suitable
for applications requiring narrow spacing for aesthetic or
functional reasons.

Aluminum I-Bar Swage-Locked spacing are 11/16”, 8/16”

and 7/16”

Aluminum Rectangular Bar Swage-Locked spacing are 13/16”,

11/16”, 10/16” 8/16”and 7/16”

Note: 1/2” (8 space) and 7/16” (7 space) meet ADA

SAFETY-GRIP® BOLT SEATS

Safety-Grip® planks can be mechanically fastened to
a structural support by using specially designed Bolt
Seats which seat within the large debossed holes, below
the walking surface. Bolt Seats have an oblong hole to
accommodate a 3/8” bolt, and are available in:
• 11 ga., G90 Galvanized
• .125” Aluminum
• 316L Stainless

DIAMOND-GRIP® BOLT SEATS

Diamond-Grip® planks can be mechanically fastened to a
structural support by using specially designed Bolt Seats
which seat in between the raised diamonds below the
walking surface. Bolt Seats have a round hole to accom-
modate a 3/8” bolt, and are available in:
• 12 ga., G90 Galvanized
• .125” Aluminum
• Stainless by special request only.
• Optional square hole in bolt seat to accommodate
5/16” carriage bolt available by special request
(H12262SQ)

MID-SUPPORT CLIP ASSEMBLY

Between structural supports it may be necessary to
tie planks together to minimize relative deflection.
This is accomplished by using a Mid-Support Clip
which draws the plank’s side channels together by
applying pressure between the bolts and the clip
edge.

“J” CLIP ASSEMBLIES

In order to alleviate the necessity of drilling a
hole through a structural member, a Bolt Seat
and “J” Clip assembly can be used. The fric-
tion connection is accomplished by wedging
the grating between the Bolt Seat and structural
support, by applying pressure to the underside
of the flange of the supporting steel. Not rec-
ommended in areas subject to vibration.

GatorDeck Pultruded Grating
TM

Pultrusion is a continuous molding process in which glass roving, Slip-resistant surface

glass matting, and a synthetic surface veil are literally “pulled”
Patented flush-top
simultaneously through a flame-retardant polyester or vinylester cross-rod and bearing bar
resin bath. Desired geometric shapes are formed and solidified as
they are pulled through a heated steel die. Seasafe’s GatorDeckTM Two-part mechanical
pultruded grating provides the ultimate combination of strength, locking cross-rod
corrosion resistance, and structural integrity as a result of the auto-
Self-draining
mated pultrusion process.

Creative Solutions to Difficult Problems

Products: Structural Products, Mezzanines, Grating

Industry: Offshore Oil Exploration & Production
PROBLEM: Provide safe personnel access to equipment; Christmas trees in
well bays, compressors, tanks, etc. Eliminate need for scaffolding that has to
be set up and taken down. Ladders do not provide a safe platform for working.
Areas can be wet and oily, creating safety hazard. A non-welding solution is
preferred, because of volatile and inflammable conditions.

SOLUTION: Fiberglass platforms and mezzanines can be prefabricated and

installed by hand as an erector set and require no shut down of production
because there is no burning or welding involved. A mezzanine in a well bay, for
example, provides safe walk-up access to the upper portion of the Christmas
trees and other equipment.

WHY SEASAFE? Seasafe grating has a coarse, silica grit surface either bonded
or embedded to the grating for excellent slip resistance.
Seasafe offers survey, quotation, detailing, fabrication, and complete turn key
installation ensuring a successful project for the customer.

Products: Substructure, Grating, Handrails, Stairways

Industry: Chemical Processing (Manganese)
PROBLEM: Quickly replace personnel access platforms
around electrowinning tanks that are exposed daily to
acid solutions as well as physical abuse from heavy
starter plates. The current structure had deteriorated to
the point of potential collapse.

SOLUTION: Provide an engineered fiberglass

substructure, grating, handrail and stairways to
eliminate beam deterioration and safety hazards.
The slip-resistant surface minimizes slip-and-fall
accidents in the wetted area. The non-conductive FRP
material eliminates potential shock hazards during the
electrowinning process.

WHY SEASAFE? Seasafe quickly responded with

designs calling for complete replacement of aging
structural steel with FRP beams. These met the load
requirements for this heavy plating operation. The
structure was prefabricated as an “erector set” enabling
the on-site contractor to quickly and easily complete
the installation.

Accessing Tanks & Filling Tank Trucks

Products: Structural Products,

Grating, Stairs, Handrails
Industry: Waste Water Treatment
PROBLEM: Design and build safe personnel
access to 17 carbon filter tanks, each 13 feet
high, in a wet and slippery work environment.

SOLUTION: Install an FRP platform with stairs

and handrails, with slip-resistant grating and
stair treads. (Platforms for two tanks shown
here.)

WHY SEASAFE? To ensure accuracy and

ease of assembly on-site, these platforms were
assembled and inspected by the customer
at Seasafe’s plant prior to shipping to Asia.
Seasafe completely assembles each fabricated
structure at our plant then separates it into
sub-assemblies for shipment. This allows quick and trouble-free erection in the field by contractors. We proved to the customer
that we could take the design concept and turn it into a finished structure, within their schedule and budget.

Products: Structural Grating,

Handrails, Stairways
Industry: Chemical Processing
PROBLEM: Efficiently load corrosive
chemicals into tank trucks for transfer to
job site or end user. Extend life of loading
facility. Provide safe working environment.

SOLUTION: Replace metal structure

with FRP platform and walkways,
eliminating maintenance and replacement
requirements. Provide a strong but
lightweight platform with a hinged section
for safe, quick, easy access to tank truck
ports in various locations and at various
heights.

WHY SEASAFE? Seasafe designed a

platform that not only met all the job
requirements, but was capable of being
erected without cranes or heavy lifting
equipment.
