What is a cover letter and how is it composed?

Many journals ask for cover letters as part of the manuscript submission process. With electronic submissions, the
cover letter takes the place of text that might be included in the body of an email which is addressed to the editor, if, for
example, the manuscript were being delivered via email. Please note that Reviewers will not have access to the cover
letter.

Some journals require specific information to be included in the cover letter, others leave the content up to submitting
author. The Cover Letter section may also be labeled as the Comments section. Formal instructions for adding a cover
letter may be mentioned within the user instructions found at the top of the submission page where the Cover Letter
section appears, or may be found within the author guidelines provided at the Instructions and Forms tab found in the
upper right corner of the journal page.

The text of the cover letter can be composed by directly typing into the Cover Letter text box or by copying and
pasting the text from another application into the text box. If the site is so configured by the journal, the cover letter can
also be attached by using the Browse function and selecting the file to be attached.
