B. Priming Activity
 Your REACTIONS Count
Our last stop was in Singapore. Now, we have
reached our next destination, the Land of the
Morning Calm, Korea. Again, this is your
flight attendant and enjoy your stay as you
watch this video. After watching the video,
your feedback through raising your Facebook
reactions in hand would be a good help.

Are you ready?

Yes, we are ready.

(For 3 minutes, a video about showing the

traditions of Korea is played.) (Students watch the video presentation.)

C. Activity
 Raise Awareness: Respect Diversity,
Value Similarity

Directions: Below are the wedding traditions of Korea.

Determine the counterpart of these procedures in the
Philippine culture. Match the pictures in the column for
Korean culture with the culture of Philippines.

“In the left column, you may find familiar scenes

where we have already seen in the video a while ago.
Your task is to determine its counterpart or equivalent
in our culture.
However, its equivalent is not found in the board but in
our surroundings. We just have to widen our eyes to
see it. (Students with pictures under their chair

with the pictures which depict the culture
of Philippines.)
There is no wedding ring in Korea.
In the Philippines, wedding ring is indeed a symbol of
marriage but what have you noticed of its equivalent in
Korea?

there are two families. What do you think the two
families are doing?

Marvelous! In Korea, this means that the parents of the

groom and bride serve as the wedding ring.

D. Unlocking of Difficulties
 Cheese-Chase-Maze
Directions: Help the rat get its cheese through leading
it towards the right cheese. Unlock every unfamiliar
term by matching it with its synonym.

Before we proceed to the story, let us first know the

meaning of the difficult words you may encounter as
we go along to the text.

mouse. Each of its synonym can be seen in the cheese

maze.)
E. Analysis
 It’s SHOWtime!
Parents serve as the wedding ring for their decision
dictates the future of their children. Today, we are
going to have the fable entitled “The Vanity of the
Rat”.

Let us recall, what is a fable?

(A student is called to recall.)
Very good! You have a sharp memory.

Again, what does the word ‘vanity’ mean? A fable is a story whose characters are

visualize the scene.)
But before that, I want you to close your eyes and
imagine the scenery of Korea, the calm and refreshing
surroundings as well as friendly and respectful people
you encounter all day. Parents whose only thought is a (Students close their eyes.)
good future for their children. A family who will give
the best they can.

It’s time to open your eyes.

(Students open their eyes.)

Today, Mr. and Mrs. Rat is inviting you to witness

their daughter’s wedding. However, they are still
looking for the right groom for Rena.

You are to witness a fable which shows one of Korea’s

tradition in arranging their children ‘s marriages.

Rena: “Hi, I am Rena and I am about to get married to

a respectable family. My parents, Mr. and Mrs. Rat,
who love me so much, are so anxious about the man
who would take care of me for the rest of my life.”

Mr. Rat: “I know that Mr. Sun is the most high-

stationed and well-descended person that is fit to marry (Students are presented with a live show
our daughter.” performed by their teacher and selected
classmates.)
“Hello, Mr. Sun! I would like you to know that my
daughter Rena is too old to marry now, and that we
would be very pleased to welcome you into our family
as Rena’s husband. We chose you from all the men we
know because of your high position and your great
power.”

Mr. Sun: “Your offer is indeed kind, Mr. Rat. I feel

that it is only fair to tell you, however, that I am not the
most powerful person of your acquaintance. I would
like to recommend to you Mr. Cloud, who can cover up
my face and keep me from shining.

Mr. Rat: “Yes of course, of course! Mr. cloud is

certainly more powerful.”

Mr. Cloud: You seem not to know that there is one

who is worthier of your honor than I. Though I
sometimes get the better of Mr. Sun, I am still a mere
servant of Mr. Wind’s. His blast and growl make me go
anywhere he pleases, whether I want to or not.”

Mr. Rat: Mr. Wind is indeed much more powerful. He

is certainly the proper husband for our daughter.

Mr. Wind: I am indeed powerful enough, for forests

tremble and ship toss in fear of me. But there is one
more powerful than I. it is Mr. Wall. He sets his strong
legs firm upon the earth and stands immovable in my
way, arms folded, eyes blinking. But for him, how
could I meddle in the lives of families!

Mr. Wall: It is quite true that I, without any sign of

outward exertion can check the progress of the wind
which commands the cloud, which overpowers the sun.
But what am I to you, O Mr. Rat? Your prosperous
race can undermine me and make me fall in the
twinkling of an eye, if need be. Oh, Mr. Rat, I am at
your mercy.”

Mr. Rat: How true, how very true! Of course, the race
of rats is the most powerful of all. And my glorious
race is next to none. The only person for our darling
Rena to marry is another rat.”
Mrs. Rat: And I know just the person: that nice Roger
Rat who seems to like Rena so much. And his parents
are such good friends of ours, too.

Mr. Rat: Old Roland Rat’s boy? An excellent idea.

Rena: *giggles coyly* I don’t want Roger to know

how much delighted I am to be arranged with Roger.
Like most Korean girls, I am so shy whenever I am
with boys.

Mr. Rat: I am convinced that we had made the best

possible match for our daughter.

Discussion:

It looks like everyone understood the story. Did you

understand the story?
Based on the story, what characteristics do Mr. and
Mrs. Rat want for Rena?

Superb! Do the characters of the fable seem to be real

human beings?

You are right.

What made you think so?

Yes, we understand the story.

Yes
Exceptional! How about the similarities of Korean (Students’ answer may vary.)
culture and Filipino culture in terms of choosing their
in-laws? What have you noticed between the two?
It is because the characters express
themselves like human beings.
