The myth of water scarcity is on target. Water is an infinite resource if we take care of it
and use it wisely. Though if we don't, then we'll have to face the economic consequences
of forced changes in livelihood because water is locally scarce or too polluted.
Singapore's work should be recognized and observed throughout the world, with respect
to energy consumption as well as for resolution of water shortages. The particular
approach relies on having a well-formed wastewater collection system, clean-water
distribution infrastructure and reliable source of electricity. Though that infrastructure
may be lacking in many parts of the world, perhaps some lessons may be learned from
certain parts of the process. For areas with plenty of rainfall or groundwater, for example,
perhaps Singapore's purification processes could be adapted for use with non-wastewater
sources.
