Composite

Materials
Materials that are made out of
combining two or more materials to
enhance their properties.

VOCABULARY CHECK:
1. Combining - Becampur
2. Enhance - Meningkatkan/Menguatkan
3. Properties - Ciri-ciri (strong, hard, rigid, etc)
Why are
Composites
used?
They are designed to
solve a specific
problem. By
combining two or
more materials, they
can be more efficient,
stronger or lighter.
Example:
CONCRETE
Concrete is a mixture of stones,
cement and sand. They are also
usually made with metal inside the
concrete to prevent it from cracking.
MODERN COMPOSITES
THAT YOU NEED TO
KNOW HAS 3:

1. CARBON-FIBRE
REINFORCED
POLYMERS (CFRP)

2.GLASS-FIBRE
REINFORCED
POLYMERS (GFRP)

3. KEVLAR
1. CARBON-FIBRE
REINFORCED
POLYMERS (CFRP)
CFRP is made from high-tensile
strength carbon fibres which are
then encased in a polymer resin.

Properties
- Expensive
- Strong
Examples
- Stretch-resistant - Car bodies
- Rigid - Helmets
- Lightweight - Bicycle frame
- Can withstand heat - Tennis rackets
2. GLASS-FIBRE
REINFORCED
POLYMERS (GFRP)
CFRP is made from strands of glass, which forms into
a fabric. These strands are put onto a mould and set
in place by adding polymer resin. Once the resin is
"cured", the GFRP is taken out of the mould.

Properties - Strong - Lightweight - Glass-fibres can be toxic

Examples - Car bodies - Canoes - Boats

Applying Glass Fibres

with Polymer Resin onto
moulds to make boats.

Taking the GFRP out

of the mould.
3. KEVLAR
Kevlar is made out of strong fibres
woven into fabric. This fabric is
made into clothes for protection.

Properties - Strong - Lightweight

- Heat-resitant - Flexible

Examples - Bullet-proof vests

- Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
such as gloves and suits worn by
firefighters.
