Self, Self-Concept, and Identity

Topic/Lesson

1. Difficult Concepts (What concepts did you find difficult to understand?)

i. The concept of the metacognitive experience is what I found difficult. It is because of the
relationship of our thoughts and our feelings. Maybe I understand this concept ironically,
because I am not that confident that I understood what I read about metacognitive
experiences.
ii. The stability of self is what I also found difficult to understand because everything that
surrounds us change.
iii. Identity-Based Motivation is also one of the topics/concepts I find it hard to understand. It
was hard to understand the identity congruence and incongruence.

2. Insights (What new insights or learnings did you gain in discussion/ activity?)

i. Before reading the article/understanding the lesson, I thought that I was the only one or one
of the few people to compare themselves to others. However, reading the
article/understanding the lesson, I now think/realize that every people compare themselves to
one another to boost one’s self esteem. This cannot be avoided because all humans categorize
themselves. By categorizing ourselves, we become who we are that are in the same category.
We behave in the group that we are in. That is where we start comparing ourselves to others.

ii. Before reading the article/understanding the lesson, I thought people have the same thoughts
and ideas, perceptions and characteristics with one another. However, reading the
article/understanding the lesson, I now think/realize that the identity and how people perceive
things in the surroundings are based on the group that the person is currently belonging into.
The person’s mind will somehow adapt in the environment that the person is into.

iii. Before reading the article/understanding the lesson, I thought changing our behavior will be
the point where we consider ourselves as “new”. However, reading the article/understanding
the lesson, I now think/realize that even though how hard we change ourselves, we will
become the same person that we used to be.
3. Questions (What questions would you want answers for? Or vague areas you want more
explanations about?
i. How did John Locke asserted the famous quote of Rene Descartes, “I think, therefore I
am”?
ii. Why do people change their behavior just to be accepted by others?
iii. Can we really know who we really are?
