Culture and Sexual Self-Disclosure in Intimate Relationships

Topic/Lesson

1. Difficult Concepts (What concepts did you find difficult to understand?)

i. I had a hard time understanding the word Self-Disclosure.
ii. The relationship between general self-disclosure and sexual self-disclosure
iii. Why is there no relationship between power and sexual self-disclosure

2. Insights (What new insights or learnings did you gain in discussion/ activity?)

i. Before reading the article/understanding the lesson, I thought conservative countries and
liberated countries have different thoughts about sexual preferences. However, reading the
article/understanding the lesson, I now think/realize that this is in fact true, conservative
people have a harder time opening to their partners about their sexual desires and preferences
rather than the liberated people.

ii. Before reading the article/understanding the lesson, I thought right from the start of the
Chinese civilization, they were conservative when it comes to sex. However, reading the
article/understanding the lesson, I now think/realize the Chinese culture evolved from having
sex to gain social acceptance to chastity. In the present times, Chinese are now more open
when it comes to sex and the likes.

iii. Before reading the article/understanding the lesson, I thought Americans were less
trustworthy about sexual topics. However, reading the article/understanding the lesson, I now
think/realize that America is an individualistic and low context society which means people
are expected to speak their minds and tell the truth.

3. Questions (What questions would you want answers for? Or vague areas you want more
explanations about?
i. What will happen when all the people are sexually conservative? And vice versa.
ii. In connection to my first question, how will it affect the entire humanity?
iii. Does patriarchy have a negative effect on a person’s sexual self-disclosure?
