Chapter 1
Performance Management
Overview
Performance management refers to the performance management of the mobile network.
To be specific, it monitors network operation status to guarantee the effective, stable and
safe operation of the network. Besides, it collects and analyzes network device data to
provide sufficient and complete data for network maintenance staff, so that they make
adequate policies for network operations to guarantee the most effective operation of the
network.

1.1 Overview
Performance Management System Overview
This chapter describes the concepts, the principles related to measurement task
management, performance data query, performance threshold management in the USPP
system, and the performance management flows in different cases.

The OMM of the ZXUN USPP is built on the COMMV4 platform and supports the B/S
structure. The performance management system is integrated into the OMM, which
collects and stores performance data based on performance measurement tasks that
users create. Users can also customize KPIs on the basis of counters, or set KPI
thresholds so that an alarm will be raised if a KPI reaches its threshold.

Figure 1-1 shows the structure of the performance management system.

ZXUN USPP Performance Management Operation Guide

Figure 1-1 Performance Management System Structure

l Collection of service performance data

Each service process includes an agent which collects performance data on this
process. After the PM server sends a measurement task (including measurement
object information) to the agent, the agent starts collecting performance statistics
on this process. The PM server starts a timer, and combines performance statistics
based on the performance granularity to collect performance data cached on the
agent. Then the PM server processes the performance data and stores the data into
the database for query.
l Collection of 3G platform performance data
The OAM agent of the 3G platform collects and stores performance data on each
service application. The OAM PM Manager manages performance tasks and provides
the TLV (private interface), XML, SNMP interfaces and command line for data query
and collection.
The OMM PM Manager uses the COMM platform to interact with the OMP through the
TLV interface. The COMM platform sends tasks to the OMP and the OMP forwards
the tasks to relevant modules of the 3G platform. Then these modules actively send
performance data to the OMM. The OMM PM server translates, matches, and filters
the performance data and stores it into the database for query.

Basic Concepts of Performance Management

l Measurement Object

Measurement objects refer to the physical or logical entities to be measured or their

combinations, such as an entire exchange, a location area, a destination code, etc.
l Measurement Type

1-2

SJ-20131014104201-005|2013-10-18 (R1.0) ZTE Proprietary and Confidential

Chapter 1 Performance Management Overview

A measurement type is the basic unit of measurement to realize the measurement

of different indices of the measurement object. Different measurement types exist
under different measurement objects. Measurement types can be selected according
to indices to be measured.
l Counter
The counters refer to specific measurement indices contained in the measurement
type. Each measurement type contains several measurement indices. The relation
between measurement type and counter is as shown in Figure 1-2.

Figure 1-2 Relations Among Measurement Object, Measurement Type and Counter

l Calculation Index

Calculation indices evaluate device performance. They are obtained through

performing four arithmetic operations on several measurement tasks. The system
usually presets several calculation items according to general applications.
l Collection Granularity
Collection granularity refers to the cycle to collect data from foreground boards.
Available options include 5 minutes, 15 minutes, 30 minutes and 1 hour.

l Query Granularity
Query granularity refers to the cycle to query performance data. Available options
include 5 minutes, 15 minutes, 30 minutes, 1 hour, and 1 day. The query granularity
must be equal to or longer than the collection granularity.
l QoS

QoS is a security mechanism of the network to solve network delay and congestion
problems. In case of network overload or congestion, QoS ensures that important
services are not delayed or discarded; meanwhile, it guarantees the effective
operation of the network.

ZXUN USPP Performance Management Operation Guide

1.1.1 Measurement Task Management

Function
A measurement task defines the rules for collecting performance data, including collection
period, measurement object, and statistical items.
Users can create, modify, delete, activate, and deactivate a task, and export the task data.

Principle
Figure 1-3 shows the measurement task management principle.

Figure 1-3 Measurement Task Management Principle

The measurement task management principle is described as follows:

1. A user logs in to the PM server from the PM client, and selects a measurement type
and measurement object to create a measurement task.
2. The PM server stores the task information in the database, forwards it to the TA for
analysis, and caches the task information.
3. The agent of the corresponding service process synchronizes information on the
measurement object.
4. The agent returns the task processing result to the PM server.
5. The PM server processes and returns the result to the PM client.

1.1.2 Performance Data Query

Function
The performance data query function enables users to query performance data based on
specified conditions and to query performance data in multiple windows.

Principle
Figure 1-4 shows the performance data query principle.

1-4

Chapter 1 Performance Management Overview

Figure 1-4 Performance Data Query

The performance data query principle is described as follows:

1. A user logs in to the PM server from the PM client and set performance query condi-
tions to initiate a query.
2. The PM server processes the query request and sends an SQL statement of query to
the database.
3. The database returns the required performance data to the PM server.
4. The PM server processes and returns the required performance data to the PM client.

1.1.3 Performance Threshold Management

Function
Users can set a performance threshold for a specific performance object. If the
performance object exceeds the threshold, the system sends an alarm to the alarm
module. Performance threshold alarms can be checked in the alarm management system
of the OMM.
Users can create, modify, view, delete, query, and export performance thresholds.

Principle
Figure 1-5 shows the performance threshold management principle.

ZXUN USPP Performance Management Operation Guide

Figure 1-5 Performance Threshold Management Principle

The performance threshold management principle is described as follows:

1. A service process reports performance data to the PM server.
2. The PM server compares the data to the preset threshold. If it exceeds the threshold,
the system sends an alarm to the PM client.
3. The PM client displays the threshold alarm.

1.2 Application Scenarios

1.2.1 Performance Management Operations for a New System
Any NE that just be created is configured with performance measurement, including
measurement objects, and measurement period. With these configurations, performance
measurement results can be properly reported to the NE management system so that

2.2 Measurement Task Management

Performance measurement task is a basic management unit in performance management
system.
Measurement task defines a certain method of collecting, storing and transmitting data,
and also the way to display and handle the final performance data. It collects data
according to the defined task scheduling rules and the detailed measurement granularity
and thus generates measurement reports. A logic measurement task (a measurement
task created by the user) defines when, from which object of which NE on the foreground,
and how often the performance data (counter) for what purpose is collected.
To collect the NE’s performance data and send the collected data to the background NE
management system in messages, you have to create performance measurement tasks
in the performance management system so as to get the performance data in time during
running of the system .
